Question re: the other AMC Alist sub

Is the AMCAlist sub affiliated with AMC ? They seem pretty strict/weird about what topics they allow.I feel like I see complaints deleted by mods regularly

EDIT: I see this message when I just commented: ""mentions of the other subreddit are not allowed nor are talking about them"

uhhh, sorry, I guess??

Additional edit to say: feel free to delete this whole thing if it's gonna cause a headache. I think I get the picture lol

I Miss Akasha and Rush Street

These were the go-tos when we first moved here. Every time I get hungry I think of them, and I'm hungry

So just an Akasha/Rush Street appreciation post

Spider-Man: Brand New Day

I am writing this with an emphasis on the character of Spider-Man and how this works as an adaptation, so skip the italicized part below if you aren't interested in that background .

For some context, I think Spider-Man 2 is one of the top superhero movies of all time, and I think that version is still the best adaptation.

The MCU version of Spider-Man started off well enough with Homecoming. Great villain, high school setting worked. Tom Holland is a little too "cute" for Peter Parker but he did a good job. I did not like the connection to Tony Stark nor the high tech aspects of the suit, etc. This obviously was more and more pronounced in subsequent entries/the Avengers movies. Spider-Man is/should be essentially a "loner"/outsider character and this was dispensed with way too early. He's also a "street level" character, closer to Daredevil than Superman (albeit somewhere in-between in terms of his powers).

I can hardly remember Far From Home but I didn't care for it. Just as I didn't like taking Spider-Man out of NYC so quickly in Homecoming, now he was in Europe. It's all just getting too far away from the "friendly neighborhood" aspect of the character. The whole unmasking thing was also premature.

No Way Home falls into the unfortunate Multiverse category. We have had Spider-Man in DC, in Europe, way out in space, and now multidimensional existence. SNORE. I dislike multiverse hijinks in almost any case and think the MCU made a huge mistake going into this creative cul-de-sac where the stakes are the very existence of reality, yet nothing really seems to matter. Did they do a good job with aspects of this overgrown fan service story? Sure. But it was bloated, it was patronizing, and most of all, it was just not appropriate to the character.

The movie ended with a double-edged sword: On the one hand. Peter Parker looked set to live a classically-Peter Parker life. On his own and struggling. On the other hand, we were going to be subjected to more boringly fantastical elements because of the memory loss / love story angle.

So I went into Brand New Day unsure which way it was going to break. Would it take advantage of Peter's new situation or lean into the memory loss / love story? For the first section of the movie, it seemed to be the former. It was pretty on point and fun. Unfortunately that did not last. The shots from the comics were merely superficial nods. It almost literally was telling the audience "We just looked at the covers, here's some references for the comic book nerds" while taking nothing of substance from the comics and then continuing down the more grandiose sci-fi fantasy path on which they have had this iteration of Spider-Man .

Along these lines, the Hand was wasted completely. Another superficial "sampling" from comics, repurposed in a toothless, purposeless way. Just more henchmen for another dull bureaucratic bad guy entity.

Speaking of bad guys, do they choose from Spider-Man's deep and fun and interesting rogue's gallery? Of course not - as mentioned, that is restricted to a couple cheap cameos early on. Instead, like with Tony Stark's intrusion into Homecoming, they chose to MCU-ize it by bringing in X-Man-to-be Jean Grey. But not just any Jean Grey - a malign, murderous Jean Grey, complete with outsized scope of power (always a bad habit of superhero movies that is not getting any better). So it's a negative-negative: They don't use a classic villain, and the villain they do use for purposes of MCU "synergy" is hideously mis-portrayed and lame.

The heart of the movie, such as it is, does revolve around Peter's relationship with MJ and Ned, which I'm sure is a big reason the movie has been so successful. People are very invested in this crew, which I understand. But as mentioned earlier, I find the whole "will they won't they kinda sorta remember" thing extremely boring and uncharacteristic of Spider-Man storytelling. I can handle a bit of it but my concerns that this would be the basis for much of the movie were unfortunately correct.

I kind of liked the Hulk though it didn't make a ton of sense, given what we know of the character. Why was Banner wearing the bracelet when it had been established he had integrated Banner/Hulk? I didn't like that choice either but it seems really inconsistent / convenient to this particular plot/themes.

On that note, the "spider taking over Peter" aspect was woefully underbaked and - yet again - kind of beside the point of the character. But if you insist on doing it, please go whole hog as in the comic, with the extra arms, etc. Yeah it's dopey but at least it's SOMETHING. I don't know why they included this subplot except as a lame attempt to tie Peter's plight to that of Jean Grey. It didn't work and was unnecessary. Why are we contriving thematic elements to connect Spidey to another, shoehorned character *in his own movie*??

I'm sure I'm missing a gripe or two. As I've explained, I disagree in principle with aspects of this version of Spider-Man. They omit elements that are great and add elements that are not. But I still think there was a better version of this movie, even with the memory loss, even with all the contrivances of making Jean Grey the villain. There are things I enjoyed about the movie - the early scenes; the Hulk; some of the action. But overall, it was a missed opportunity for a proper reset of the character. (On that note, a final question: What does Peter Parker do for money? They almost completely ignored the core of this character by ignoring the mundane aspects of Peter Parker's life.)

Dune 3 Tickets Release

Does anyone know, or have an idea of HOW to know, when Dune 3 "regular" tickets go on sale? Using the AMC app reminder isn't possible bc it thinks they are already available due to the 70mm IMAX screenings

New bike lines are great and all but

Can we get some maintenance on EXISTING lanes? I guess it's not as sexy for politicians to brag about but there are multiple lanes and paths I use that require some serious fixing up

Venice, the Washingtons, Marvin Braude (especially around the Marina) I'm looking at you - for a start

Another mess

Re: Avengers - Everybody got signed out of A List right?

I got into the app fine but was logged out . One auditorium on sale. Found some cherry seats for Friday night. Saw I was signed out, signed in. Error after error. Tried different seats, different days and times. Errored into oblivion

Doomsday indeed

The Odyssey Review - Nolan's Crowning Achievement

I'm not going to say it's Christopher Nolan's best movie, or most "Nolan-esque". But with his filmography thus far and the incredible skill and vision it took to pull this off, I would say this puts him in the pantheon, or, if he's already in the pantheon, moves him up several spots.

The primary thing I admire, less than a day after viewing, is the film's ability to be true to these very old but still make it *feel* grounded. I believe that has been Nolan's greatest asset generally - giving fantastical elements the heft of realism, even when they are preposterous. This movie does that by walking on a razor thin line, a tonal balancing act that only someone who has had a lot of experience could reasonably be expected to pull off. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it doesn't work for some viewers, but it did for me (and apparently for many others).

I think the sharpness of the vision required to, for instance, navigate the cyclops sequence, keeping what might be considered anachronistic details and beats is incredibly impressive. There are several other scenes like this and they all work extremely will. It ends up creating a very unusual cinematic experience. I can say I haven't seen anything quite like it, in the best way possible.

Another plus to this movie is the thematic "twist". The lesson learned, the subconscious reason for Odysseus's prolonged absence, is resonant and timely. If you're going to take an ancient text like this and put a spin on it, this is a great way to do it.

The only downside to this movie for me was that the spectacle more or less ceases just as it moves into the final section. So just as I was getting a bit uncomfortable, it slows down a bit. It's not like the quality is off, or even the pacing - but for me I could have used something extremely intriguing and fantastical to get over that last hump comfortably.

Ultimately, there really is no good reason in theory this movie should work at all, much less work this well. I saw it in IMAX but I am 99% sure it would work nearly as well on any big screen. It's like propaganda for cinema. Not just epic or fantasy cinema, though certainly those are the elements that arguably show off the medium the most. But I think it is still a great argument for telling stories this way. I'm not sure if it's a dying art form or not, but The Odyssey makes me optimistic.

What to do after a (minor) collision?

One of these clueless right-turning cars finally got me. I hit the ground, I'm ok, bike's ok (I think)

I wasn't sure really what to do though. The guy did stop and apologize but his vocabulary quickly shrank until he said "no English" (he did inform me he was a "priest"?)

I thought it would be prudent to exchange information in case there were damages to the bike (or myself, I suppose... things that didn't hurt at first did hurt later!) but that was around when he said he did not speak the language. I ended up just taking a picture of his plate. He was kind but getting kind of edgy.

He said we should message each other and offered his phone so I put in my number, expecting nothing. And nothing is what I got, which is ok in this case bc there's not much to say and I did take that pic of his plate

But because I was kind of stunned and adrenaline-y etc I was wishing I had a kinda checklist instead of improvising, like am I doing what needs to be done

Really glad my bike did not get seriously damaged, it's pretty new still

edited to add breaks

Issue streaming on computer

I have not been able to get any movie to play on Safari on my iMac. Admittedly it's an old model but it does everything ELSE fine so I don't know that age is the issue. No other streaming platforms are doing this.

The film loads but doesn't play. I can see in the timeline frames from the film but it just won't PLAY

Anyone else experience this and/of know of a fix. It's been like this for weeks.

(No issues on the TV. Chrome works but I prefer not to use it)

Supergirl - getting a bad rap

I don't know why the reviews are so negative on this movie. It was kind of exactly what you would expect, in a good or at least decent way. Meaning - summer popcorn movie. The lead is engaging, the bad guy is at least somewhat intimidating, the "Special guest star" / wild card is fun.

Is it a movie that needed to be made, judging by the plot? No. Clearly they were just like "We need to make a Supergirl movie" and came up with a story. But it's not a bad story! It's perfectly fine. Seemed like the audience I saw it with enjoyed it.

I'm not gonna try and sell it like I was bowled over, but I was entertained. Nothing REALLY bothered me, it moved along nicely, there were some nice touches to elevate it here and there, mostly due to the lead's performance.

It kind of reminds me of Disclosure Day in the sense that there is a negative overreaction. Disclosure Day was "worse"/more flawed but I see people at least online losing their minds over it. Supergirl is not eliciting that strong of a reaction but I am equally puzzled why more people aren't giving it a decent/good rating.

I Would Pay Money to Skip the AMC Coke ad

I would easily throw in an extra couple bucks to not have this ad run

It doesn't help that it's usually the third or so ad focused on something *you are already doing* (watching a movie at AMC)

AMC should list auditorium number when choosing seats

Call me crazy - though in this group I am guessing at least some people "get it" - but I have notes on my phones per each auditorium at my go-to theater so I know which seats I liked the best

But I have to book before I find out which auditorium it actually is, which means I have to guess and of course sometimes I get it wrong. Then I refund and rebook. This could be avoided if they just listed the auditorium when booking!

EDIT: I just gotta say for the people who feel obligated to chime in that this is not a big deal/first world problem: *YES, you are posting in a MOVIE THEATER THREAD. Everyone here knows this is not life and death*

Who ARE you people???

Haha, new here and I say this with good humor but who are the people buying tickets at like 5:30 am? I get the alert that tickets are on sale for Disclosure Day around then but I didn't see it till 6:45am. SO MANY seats already bought? Like is the Venn diagram of early risers and A List members that tight??

Anyone else leery of these cement barriers?

I'm all for bike lanes and bike lanes being safe but I don’t actually feel that comfortable with these cement barriers. Maybe it’s me, maybe I'm paranoid, but I feel kinda trapped in those lanes
