Slow Ripening Anyone?

Is anyone else experiencing some incredibly low ripening with some of their hotter varieties this year?

I thought the excessive heat and UV would have helped them along but I’ve only harvested one ripe red habanero.

My chocolate habaneros are waaayyy off. My plants are quite big and some have a lot of fruit set but just nothing turning colour at speed.

Pests or BER?

I’m starting to think it’s more pests than blossom end rot as the rot isn’t at the end of the fruit. Thoughts and remedies? I have had some issues with slugs in the early days when they were closer to the ground.

I’m in the UK and growing in raised beds.

Lucca Questions

We’ve just booked a week in Lucca 17-24 September this year. It’ll be me, my wife and our 2 year old daughter.

We looked at plenty of places before booking: Iseo, Monopoli, places in France etc. but got a really good vibe from Lucca.

We know there are walls to walk (we’re from York, UK, so used to walled cities), bikes to hire and easy transport to other places. I’ve already booked a child-friendly wine tasting 15 mins from Lucca.

We had planned on the following:

  1. Beach day at Viareggio
  2. Day trips to Pistoia and Livorno
  3. Maybe a trip to Florence if weather suits

What other hidden gems are we missing? Our little one is really happy just waddling round, saying hello to locals, people watching etc. so no need for extravagant play parks or anything.

Habaneros on the way!

The outdoor habaneros in raised beds have become acclimatized to the hot weather we’re having and are now showing signs of fruiting!

Superhots such as 7 Pot Brain Strain are a bit behind but expected for superhots I guess.

Pods here are on a ‘Big Red Sun Habanero’. Have some chocolate habanero that are lagging a bit but on their way.

How we all getting on? Any particularly fast-growing varieties in this heat?

Strangely Resilient Plants

I’ve been away and had someone looking after my plants for me. As you can see, I have a small ‘poly tunnel’ type thing going on to shade them from the elements, but I left it off this morning on my raised bed habaneros.

Considering it’s reached 33 degrees today, and there’s been full sun on these all day, they haven’t wilted once (apart from the bottom leaves that matured indoors). I’m also not seeing any sun scald or anything at all?

Big one in the middle is now at 45cm, so getting there for a habanero but the front row I think are a bit more restricted by bed depth.

Full Time Outsiders

Has anyone else used the cloudy whether this week to harden ahead of the sunny week we have coming up?

Had some dramatic chilli behaviour already with wilting and stress, but hoping they’ll enjoy being out in warmer weather.

NB - These are just in pots for now while I get hold of compost for the raised beds.

Yellow Spotting

Is anyone able to diagnose this for me? It’s now appearing on the majority of my plants. They were all started indoors in January, and have been under grow lights since. The lights are about 30-40cm from the canopy of the plant and I’m getting about 200-300 PPFD. I have been feeding these with chilli focus every other watering, but they haven’t actually been watered for about a week because I potted them up and top watered at that point to bed the roots in. The pots still feel quite heavy so I haven’t felt the need to water.

I have been hardening them off in the British weather, but it’s a bit of a colder week this week so keeping them inside.

Can’t see any mites, thrips or aphids in the vicinity. Any ideas?

It’s still not consistently warm enough up here in North Yorkshire to get these chaps outside full time (and the greenhouse has been reserved for tomatoes this year). These are now in 7.5L pots for a few weeks before going into raised beds and grow bags.

Anyone else increasingly running out of room indoors? I’ve had to build a make shift frame in my garden office just to keep these ticking over!
