Any challenges closing US bank accounts after returning?

I may not be able to close all my bank accounts - mix of checking/savings across 5 major banks. Any risks if I were to do this online, once I am back in India? I am carrying my US number (ported to Tello).

Asking this because usually they expect us to visit the bank. All accounts are in good standing, no loans, pending fee etc.

Average relocation budget if shipping electronics/furniture

Hi all,

Looking for a high level estimate of moving costs from US/Texas to India. I understand it depends on various factors, and I have read through related posts on this subreddit. Still worried of getting duped by shipping companies. Looking for recent experiences before I call for quotes and negotiate.

If it helps, I want to ship a 55" TV (new-ish), dyson appliances and some expensive wooden furniture (costs ~2K new). A few boxes of personal belongings plus kitchen/steel appliances. Dont want to throw away but I was unable to sell it off even at a discount and I have run out of time. I am already throwing away a bunch of used stuff, which hurts :(

Additionally, most of the relocation services I checked are doing pickup but not end-to-end delivery, including packing. Any recommendations? Thank you!

What to do when assets exceed FDIC/SIPC limits?

I have a self-managed brokerage account with Charles Schwab and I wasn't aware of SIPC limits of 500K until today. I thought all securities are safe, unlike cash that's $250K FDIC.

I have been meaning to consolidate my finances (1M+ liquid) and wondering if I should split between multiple brokerage firms, or multiple brokerage accounts with CS, each give me a 500K limit.

ChatGPT recommends using Money Market funds and Treasury Bills, but its not clear on whether these options can be traded from the same brokerage account or I'll need multiple new accounts. I ideally want one portal to trade/swap anything - bonds/equities and hold large amounts of cash temporarily. Anyone can please guide me? I am planning a career break, outside of the US, and the insurance thing now worries me.

You preferred bank/brokerage in the US?

Hi all,

On H1B, planning to return to India soon. I don't want to cut all ties as I might return to the US in an year. I have had a long credit history of about 15+ years. Would you recommend closing most? If yes, which one(s) to keep? In case I cannot get back to the US, I don't want any interruption in service or hassles operating/closing from India.

I have savings, checking and credit card accounts with these:

  1. Bank of America
  2. Chase
  3. Wells Fargo
  4. Citi

No loans anywhere. I am planning to move most of my money to my brokerage firm (Charles Schwab), and preferably keep just 1 checking account and 1 credit card. But not sure which. Did you all face any issues with either of these banks? Or Charles Schwab?
