am at stage 15 and most heroes became level 5 automatically. will this get higher in the latest stages? do I need to grind each hero?

my brother is a big fan of the series and he wanted me to try kingdom rush for a long time. im new at tower defense and not skilled for it but i decided to give it a try.
i started with Kingdom Rush Vengeance because it seems more polished in terms of art style and has more replaybility and I like the villain characters.
is it okay if i play Kingdom Rush Vengeance on casual then normal then veteran? will I actually get better? does anyone have similar experience and confirm they got better playing this new genre? I saw walkthroughs of the levels on youtube and people are using tactics I would never think of.
