Is AI really going to end humanity?

I saw this week in CNN the interview of the ex-Anthropic mathematician warning us that AI is evolving very fast and could kill us all in a decade. Now, I don't really follow alarmist or yellow journalism but I have some concerns that the future might be the one that Sarah Connor warned us about. My retirement plan didn't include waging guerrilla warfare in the San Bernardino Mountains, and if that does happen, how do I prepare for the end?
