Miss Kathleen Cleaver

Kathleen Cleaver was not just a member of the Black Panther Party, she helped shape its voice, image, and political direction. As the Party’s Communications Secretary and the first woman on its Central Committee, she created and defined the role herself, organizing demonstrations, writing pamphlets, designing posters, holding press conferences, and speaking at rallies and on national television. She helped lead the nationwide “Free Huey” campaign and stood at the center of the movement during some of its most intense years. She was also instrumental in spreading our message worldwide!

Before joining the Panthers, Kathleen worked with SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee), bringing organizing experience and revolutionary discipline into the Party. Even while facing FBI surveillance, repression, exile, and constant attacks against the Panthers, she continued fighting for Black liberation, political education, prison justice, and the people.

But her legacy did not stop there. Kathleen Cleaver went on to become a scholar, attorney, professor, and author. She graduated summa cum laude from Yale, earned her law degree from Yale Law School, practiced law, and later taught at Emory University School of Law while continuing to speak and write about civil rights, revolutionary history, and systemic injustice.

Kathleen Cleaver showed the world that revolution requires more than anger…it requires intelligence, discipline, organization, and fearless commitment to the people. Her name remains part of the foundation of Black resistance and liberation.
