Landlords of Reddit, what’s the worst experience you’ve ever had with a tenant or lodger?

I’m curious to hear from landlords and live-in landlords about their worst experiences with tenants or lodgers.
I’m particularly interested in the horror stories, whether that’s tenants refusing to pay rent, damaging properties, breaking house rules, causing problems with neighbours, refusing to leave, or behaving in completely bizarre ways.

Have you ever had a tenant who seemed perfectly reasonable during the viewing and referencing process, only to turn into a complete nightmare after moving in?
I’d also be interested to hear about any ridiculous demands, strange habits, or situations that were so absurd you couldn’t help but laugh.

What happened, how did you deal with it, and what would you do differently now?

I’m based in the UK, but I’d welcome stories from landlords anywhere in the world.

The scene in The Voyage Home would be very different in real life...

For just a moment, put your memories of this popular scene in The Voyage Home to the side.

Imagine a crowd of passengers on a real bus in San Francisco in 1986, none of whom have ever seen or heard of the Vulcan nerve pinch.

They watch as a strange man reaches for and grabs the neck of another man. The man whose neck was grabbed instantly falls unconscious.

In reality, how do you think the other people on the bus would react to this?

Hint: They certainly wouldn’t react the way the passengers in the movie reacted.

Section 21

Hypothetical question for landlords and agents.

If a managing agent serves a Section 21 notice but the property address on the notice is incorrect, how is this typically viewed in practice?

Would landlords generally:

• withdraw the notice and reissue it
• treat it as invalid from the outset
• consider it a minor administrative error if the intended property is otherwise clear

I’m not looking for legal advice on a specific case and can’t provide identifying details. I’m interested in how landlords would usually handle an incorrect property address on a Section 21 and whether it is generally seen as a simple mistake or something more serious with the agent’s process.

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing your responses.
