Is there an online skill that takes a long time to learn but is easier to monetize once you're good at it?

I'm not looking for a "get rich quick" skill.

In fact, I'm completely fine with spending months learning something difficult if it creates better long-term opportunities.

My ideal situation would be a skill that:

Takes time and effort to master.

Doesn't require a huge upfront investment.

Can be started with a relatively small budget.

Has consistent demand.

Doesn't require constantly chasing clients just to survive (for example, because of repeat clients, inbound leads, or building your own assets).

I'm curious what skills experienced people would recommend and, more importantly, why.

I'd love to hear your real experiences.

I thought affiliate marketing was a low-cost business... until I learned where the real costs are.

I've been learning affiliate marketing, specifically the SEO + niche website approach, and I'd love to hear some opinions from people with real experience.

From what I've learned so far, I would break the process down into these five main parts:

  1. Choosing the right niche.

  2. Building a topical map to create topical authority.

  3. Creating high-quality content.

  4. Building a strong internal linking structure.

  5. Earning quality backlinks.

When I first got into affiliate marketing, I thought it was a low-investment business because all you needed was a domain and hosting.

But after learning more, I realized those are actually the smallest expenses.

The real challenge seems to be producing enough high-quality content and building backlinks if you want to create an authoritative website that can compete in search results.

So here's my question:

If someone is willing to put in the time and effort to learn SEO and affiliate marketing but doesn't have much money to invest in content creation or backlinks, what would you recommend they do?

Have any of you built a successful affiliate site on a very limited budget? If so, what strategies worked best for you?
