Airbnb Hosting in India Just Got a Little Harder

https://preview.redd.it/i4z2rqhoxsdh1.png?width=570&format=png&auto=webp&s=98fd90367ba9e04dc9a6d9eb1af76630d41a4469

Airbnb's move towards a single 15.5% service fee has sparked a lot of discussion among hosts globally. While opinions are divided, I think this change has a much bigger impact in markets like India than many people realize.

In countries where the average nightly rate is high, absorbing platform fees is difficult but manageable.

In India, it's different.

A large number of hosts operate with an average daily rate of ₹2,500–₹3,500. From that amount, they're already paying for leases or EMIs, furnishing, maintenance, housekeeping, caretaker salaries, electricity, internet, guest support, and taxes. Platform commissions are just another deduction from an already thin margin.

The discussion also raised another point that I think deserves attention.

Many guests don't think about platform fees—they only look at the final price. If hosts increase prices to maintain the same earnings, there's a real possibility that some guests will simply assume the host has become more expensive, even though a portion of that increase is tied to platform fees. Several hosts in the discussion expressed concern that the pricing change could make hosts appear more expensive or force them to rethink their pricing strategy.

For Indian hosts, the challenge isn't just the percentage itself.

It's that every additional cost makes scaling harder.

If you're managing one property, you might be able to absorb it.

If you're trying to build a portfolio of five or ten properties, every percentage point affects cash flow, reinvestment and future growth.

That's why I think the next few years will be interesting.

Hosts will start paying much more attention to where their bookings come from instead of depending entirely on a single platform. We'll likely see more experimentation with direct bookings, regional marketplaces and host-first platforms that offer better economics and greater pricing transparency.

How do we build a vacation rental ecosystem where guests get fair prices, hosts have sustainable margins and platforms continue to create value without making growth harder for the people supplying the inventory?

I'd love to hear from other Indian hosts.

How do you think this change will affect your pricing strategy over the next year?
