Hey guys, I’m looking for some advice on choosing between two monitors.
I’m currently using a 27-inch 4K IPS monitor, the AGON 274UXP, and I’m very satisfied with its SDR brightness and color reproduction.
However, I always end up wanting more, so I’m considering upgrading to a 27-inch 5K Mini LED monitor. Moving from 4K to 5K and from a matte coating to a glossy panel sounds like it would be a huge upgrade.
One thing to note, I mainly use SDR. I don’t really use HDR or local dimming features, so technically I don’t need Mini LED. Unfortunately, there are very few 27-inch 5K IPS monitors available (I know ASUS has one, but personally I’m not very interested in it..)
My main usage is
(Windows)
- Gaming
- 2D image work
Right now, I’m deciding between the Gigabyte and MSI 5K Mini LED models.
First of all, I personally prefer the Gigabyte’s design. I like that it doesn’t have the protruding chin at the bottom, and I also prefer the black color.
However, I’m a little concerned about the panel. From what I understand, the Gigabyte uses the same BOE panel as the LG 5K Mini LED, while the MSI is rumored to use an AUO panel.
I know judging panel quality purely by the manufacturer can be misleading, but I’ve always had the impression that AUO panels are generally better than BOE panels. Is the panel manufacturer something I should actually worry about?
I have only used LG panels so far, so I don’t have any personal experience with BOE or AUO. In general, which one tends to offer more accurate colors?
The MSI looks excellent on paper as well, but one thing that caught my attention is that Gigabyte specifically advertises 4K 220Hz support.
My concern with moving to 5K is gaming performance. Even with an RTX 5090, I don’t think every future game will be able to run at 5K with maximum settings. Current games can usually be handled with DLSS Performance mode with frame generation, but I expect future, more demanding games may struggle.
For those games, I’m considering dropping down to 4K resolution because I don’t want to give up path, ray tracing,
So my main question is...
When playing games at 4K resolution on a 5K monitor, will the image quality be nearly identical to a native 4K monitor running at 4K?
I’ve heard that because 5K has a higher pixel density, scaling down to 4K looks better than on lower PPI displays, and the loss of sharpness from uneven pixel scaling is less noticeable.
However, does the advertised 4K refresh rate support on the Gigabyte actually make a difference here? Or is it only about the maximum supported refresh rate and has no real impact on 4K image quality?
If the Gigabyte has an advantage in 4K clarity when gaming at 4K resolution on a 5K panel, I would probably choose it. But if there is no meaningful difference, I’m open to choosing the MSI.
I would really appreciate any advice from people who have experience with these panels or similar monitors. I might be missing something important, so I’d love to hear your thoughts on which monitor would fit my use case better!
