Are drop-in classes actually rare?

The dance school where I go offers adult classes on a drop-in basis. You sign up for one class at a time, which is really nice if you're new and not sure you want to commit, if you want to switch up which classes you take each week, or if your schedule changes because, you know, you're an adult with responsibilities. But when I've looked into taking ballet classes in other cities when I'm traveling, I've had a hard time finding other adult programs that offer the same flexibility. They require adults to sign up for a whole month or even a whole semester of classes at a time. Is this standard? Is it to do with city size? Am I just spoiled? I'm curious to hear other people's experiences.

Adult drop-in classes in Anchorage, AK?

I'm going to be in Anchorage next month and would love to take a class while I'm there. Any recommendations? TIA!
