Women in the Army Are More Likely to Be Killed by Fellow Soldiers Than Enemy Combatants

Hi everyone. I'm one of the reporters who worked on this investigation for The Intercept.

My colleague, Dr. Daniel Johnson, and I analyzed more than 14 years of Army mortality data obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, covering over 5,000 soldier deaths.

We found that over the past 15 years, female soldiers have died more often from homicide by fellow servicemembers than from combat. They also experienced homicide rates roughly twice those of women in the general U.S. population and intimate partner violence deaths at approximately three times the national rate.

The Department of Defense does not publicly produce this type of analysis, so we built it from the underlying records ourselves and supplemented it with DoD manpower data and other public records.

I handled much of the reporting for the investigation, including interviews with Army officials, members of Congress, experts, attorneys, and families affected by these cases.

Happy to answer questions about the reporting process or the methodology where I can.
