Career in the Army

Hi, I wanted to ask if you can have a career in the army. My fiancé has been looking for work and has always wanted to serve in the military. He is in the process with the Air Force, but there has been delays on his end. I was wondering if it’d be best to enlist in the army. I was also curious to know if there is a career path that can keep us stable in the future. I would love to know anyone’s thoughts and experiences. Thank you!

My spouse’s commander wants to talk to me

I’m not in the Army, so I’m sorry if I don’t use the right terms. My spouse told me that their commander wants to talk to me about them. I asked what I need to know, but my spouse basically said I don’t need to know anything and that they’re going to try to get the commander to change their mind about talking to me.

I’m not trying to get involved in more Army stuff or make anything worse. I just don’t want to walk into a conversation completely unprepared or accidentally say something that causes problems for my spouse or for us. Can I get in trouble or have rights that I need a lawyer for? Is there anything I should know before talking to a commander? Is it normal for them to reach out to spouses? Should I ask what the conversation is about first? Am I allowed to say I’m not comfortable answering something? Any advice on how to handle this would be appreciated.

I'm not sure where to vent this: I found out a Soldier whom I was stationed and friends with was caught in a CP sting

I had known this guy for my entire four years stationed there.

We met in the barracks CQ when I was a PFC and he was a SPC; I was brand new to the unit. Despite being in a Team Leader role and being surrounded by "old school" NCOs, he was eager to help out any Soldier regardless if you were under his leadership or not.

I watched him progress to CPL, SGT to SSG (post PCS and reclass), strive and overcome challenges. The Soldiers whom he helped were all by his side during these promotions. We kept in contact years post my PCS, but communitcation dwindled by early 2023 and he went almost silent later that year up to this point.

Today, I had learned through a friend that he was caught in a CP sting amongst a group of men. It hits very hard when it is someone you know, looked up to and would have never thought they would commit this despicable act.

All I can say, SSG E: Rot in prison and in hell, you pathetic shit.

Convince my wife to go active

I’m reposting completely since I butchered my prior post, I need help getting my wife on board with me transferring from the national guard to active duty

The guard interferes with my civilian jobs, I can’t keep a job due to being in the guard and the places that I can hold a job either don’t pay nearly enough or threaten to fire me due to the guard. Most of the time we’re living paycheck to paycheck, I don’t want to have to wonder every month if I’m going to be able to keep my wife and kid fed and keep a roof over their heads.

Her argument against it is PCS and not being able to choose where you live, deployments, rotations, and TDY. She’s not a fan of the idea and me constantly going to the field with me being a 12b

My main talking points are “free” insurance
Community resources
Grocery bill is cut by 1/3 with the commissary (proved at WPAB)
Steady pay including BAH
On post/ off post daycare services
She works in a field that is understaffed

Seeing how active can provide my wife and kid a better future ontop of I would love to go active at this point I feel like it’s the right decision but my wife doesn’t see it that way and in the end it is a family decision.

Ill take a spicy deluxe and a small sprite

National Guard troops fatally shoot a man in downtown Memphis

Memphis police say National Guard troops fired their weapons in the early morning hours Sunday, killing a man who was armed with a handgun.

Police say officers were responding to calls of shots fired in downtown Memphis just before 4:00 am local time when they saw "an armed male carrying a handgun." The man — identified by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation as 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson — fled on foot, pursued by Memphis police officers along with Tennessee National Guard soldiers who are assigned to the area.

What happened next was not immediately clear.

"For reasons under investigation, the situation escalated, resulting in two National Guard soldiers firing upon Johnson, striking and killing him," according to a statement from the TBI. Memphis police said the man had "turned toward NG members with his weapon" before the National Guard soldiers fired their weapons and struck him.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. No law enforcement officers were hurt in the incident, according to the TBI.

The TBI says it is investigating the incident at the request of Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy. TBI agents are "working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews," the agency said.

The National Guard has been patrolling in Memphis since October of last year as part of a federal task force, established by President Trump, to combat crime in Memphis.

Memphis has one of the highest violent crime rates in the country, according to data from the FBI. But Memphis police say overall crime and violent crime were falling in 2025 even before the National Guard deployment began. Still, some local residents told NPR they welcomed the federal intervention.

A judge in Tennessee sided with local officials, issuing a temporary injunction that blocked the deployment. But a state appeals court overturned that injunction in April, allowing the operation to continue.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will handle the investigation into the fatal shooting.

Did anyone enlist and then just go no contact with your family?

So ive decided that im going to go no contact with my family when I leave.

I just wanna know if other people do this? And if anyone has any tips for keeping them away?

BCT graduation will probably be tough when I watch all the families reunite with their soldiers. But im hoping im not the only one who has a plan like this.

WOFT Street to seat

So I’m at the brink of enlisting for the street to seat program. I have a commercial and instrument FAA certs civilian. No college or degree. I don’t want to make a bad choice. Currently 22 and the commitment would be 12 years total. I currently have 680 hours fixed wing but none rotor which I’m guessing I’d be flying. Would it be worth it or stick out the hiring shortage? Would I be screwed for jobs when out? Airlines, charters, and what not. Any input would be very helpful as it is quite the commitment. Thanks!

Army BCT Prep

I ship for army bct to fort sill on August 31st. I know it is going to be very dry and hot. Any tips to excel in basic training but also not be easily distinguishable by name, I heard that’s a bad thing? I have a cross country background so I believe the running will be adaptable, but any tips for rucking long distances, I have a feeling I may struggle in that area?

Hydrate & Don’t be a idiot like me.

Shipping out soon (08/19), so I’ve been working out extremely hard for the past 5 days. It has been over 90 degrees weather in GA for a number of consecutive days, and I’ve been doing 100 reps a day of various workouts.

Long story short, Thursday, I did 100 reps of weight dumbbell squats (26lbs) in the blazing heat thinking I was hydrated enough, boy was I wrong. Friday I wake up, and notice I’m very sore, well that’s supposed to happen right? I just did 100 reps so it’ll ease up by Sunday, boy was I fucking wrong again 💀.

Woke up Saturday morning, struggling to get out of bed, walking like a frail 80 year old down my stairs, and then extremely hard to get in and out my vehicle, went to work thinking again, regular soreness, it’ll subside soon knowing how leg days are.

Idk how the fuck I survive 6 hours tip toeing at work, but one bathroom trip made me realize this was serious, brown Coca Cola piss, already knew at that point from research it was rhabdomyolysis.

Admitted myself to the hospital, IV, blood, and the whole check up process. It’s rhabdomyolysis. So please DEP peeps, take it from me, don’t overwork yourself to the physical maximum before you ship, it can be counterproductive, and cause more harm than good. Stay hydrated, and build up.

Has anyone gone from Army tech mos straight into a civilian role with little to no additional training?

Was it easy to get a role when you got out of the Army? How long were you in for and what is your role when you got out? Do you think that anyone who joins as 17,25,or 35 mos can easily find a role when they get out or is it highly competitive?

Today is my 20-year Army-versary.

In celebration, I’m authorizing that tomorrow be a DONSA.

You’re welcome.

Oh… I’ll take the “KBR DFAC Midnight Chow Special”: omelette, fried mozzarella sticks, French toast sticks, a slice of that triple chocolate cheesecake, and a cup of the second worst coffee in the world. And a RipIt for the road.
