I'm trying to understand why I got refused Japan tourist visa despite €10k savings as a Moroccan back in February

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to understand why my Japan tourist visa application may have been refused earlier this year, and I'd appreciate any opinions from people with experience.

Application details

  • Moroccan citizen
  • Applied for a single-entry tourist visa at the Japanese Consulate in Rabat
  • Applied in February 2026 for a trip planned from April 5 to April 19, 2026 (14 days)
  • Processing time was about 1 week
  • No refusal reason was provided; I was simply informed that the application was refused

Purpose of travel

I wanted to visit Japan as a tourist after a very stressful period of work. My plan was to split my time between Osaka and Tokyo. I prepared my own day-by-day itinerary and submitted it with the application.

Employment and finances at the time

  • 23 years old
  • Employed full-time for about 8 months
  • Monthly salary around €1,000
  • Also had registered freelance activity (Moroccan auto-entrepreneur status)
  • Freelance income was similar to or higher than my salary
  • I submitted proof of employment and social security salary declarations
  • I submitted proof that I was registered as a freelancer, but I did not submit invoices or evidence of freelance revenue, and they didn't even take the document of my registration

Banking situation

  • Around €200 in checking account
  • Around €10,000 in savings
  • Submitted 6 months of bank statements
  • Submitted bank attestations for both accounts

One thing that may be relevant is that during the month before applying, I received roughly €4,500 in back payments that were owed to me from earlier work. This might have appeared as a relatively large deposit compared to my normal salary and freelance income which could have been about 2.000 euro in average

Travel history

  • No international travel history at all
  • Never held any visa from any country
  • Never previously entered another country
  • Had two prior U.S. student visa refusals due to lack of financial evidence

Personal circumstances

  • Single
  • No children
  • No property
  • No vehicle
  • Living with family

Documents submitted

  • Passport and copies
  • Visa application form
  • Photos
  • Flight reservations (paid) ETIHAD
  • Hotel reservations (one paid, one not, but reserved)
  • National ID copy
  • Employment documents
  • Social security salary declarations
  • Bank statements and bank attestations
  • Travel insurance
  • Detailed travel itinerary

I did not submit:

  • A cover letter
  • Evidence of freelance income (invoices, contracts, etc.)
  • An approved leave letter from my employer

The flights and hotels were refundable, so I was able to recover the money after the refusal.

also since I had never been to japan, the day to day itenerary was daunting and I made it while consulting with AI. I'll leave a link to it in the comments

What do you think were the strongest factors that may have led to the refusal? If I reapply in early 2027, what would you improve or add to the application?

Strange Pictures By Uketsu, No Spoilers.

Hello! It's been a while since I wrote in this sub and it's always been my favorite.

I wonder how it's surviving in the age of AI.

I just finished my first book of 2026, better late than never I guess. It's been hard picking up books in the past couple of years with the amount of work I currently have but since quitting social media a couple months ago, I've found my attention span withstanding a hundred pages a day with ease.

I don't really want to describe the book in any way, but if you read the first chapter / page, you can pretty much tell what the rest of the book is going to entail.

Translation is really good, so don't worry about that front.

The book is easily digestible and as others have commented before on Uketsu's writings, you need to suspend a lot of overthinking if you want to have fun with his stories, especially with leaps of logic. If you're a fan of Sherlock Holmes' novels, those analytical reveals are somewhat similar and good fun.

It's a short book, and if you're looking to get back to reading I suggest you start with this one. I wouldn't say you'll learn anything, or there's some general idea or such, it's more like watching a small mini-series.

I have not read Strange Houses or Strange Buildings yet, but I'm pretty sure I will...

I don't believe anymore in assigning personal arbitrary rating numbers, I would say this book is fun, wild, nice ideas, and lands some pretty nice AHA! moments

I hope you read it, and if you do, I hope you comment about it, books similar to it or other works by Uketsu

What are some personal features you add to your template starter project?

I have spent the last week working on my template starter, making it better in many ways: Security, Optimizations, Better Coding Standards, Data Integrity...

This is the engine from which I'm going to start the next few projects I have with clients, and some of my hobby projects as well.

Before I finish working on it though, I wanted to see if any of you have any interesting "tooling" or "features" you have added to your template projects that made it better to work on, or made something easier, cleaner... I don't know Improved it in some way.
