Questions of a Beginner

  1. Is it best to learn Egyptian belly dance first over fusion as a beginner? I just signed up for a class focusing on Egyptian belly dance. I really wanted to master the basics and go to the "root" so to speak before going into fusion or other forms.

  2. Is it common to repeat level 1 or beginner classes before moving into more advanced? They advised that I repeat level 1. How many times? Twice? Three times?

  3. I would love to do back bends one day. Should I consider pilates, strength training alongside belly dancing? I am curious if certain styles would benefit fro. more muscle tone, core strength etc than others in terms of being able to do it safely and smoothly.

I am so excited to get started!

Yes, I am going there. The people that consistently ghosted me and showed no respect for my time were white women. From ghosting me once I sent my resume with my last name, to giving me an offer only to vanish without a trace when it came time to sign the contract. Even from the moment I tried to transfer to another school, I faced this covert racism.

I had one university mysteriously lose my application and claim I had never submitted it. Another accepted me but never extended me a financial aid package. Both schools have since dismantled their Black studies departments and anything providing support to Black students. In my personal statement, I had said I wanted my focus to be on Black women.

Coincidence? In this political climate I think not.

So yes, I am naming the problem, since people want to make excuses and mock me. I am prepared for this post to be taken down and to be attacked or gaslit. The only people who showed me respect as a intern and ultimately as a human being were...Black women. Gasp! The internship I secured today was offered to me by a Black woman.

Now sit with that.

Why do social workers think its okay to treat interns like trash? No communication, ghosting, not providing clear timelines etc. And this is being done by women in the field, who should know better. It costs nothing to tell a student yes I have received the documentation or no sorry, we cannot move forward with the internship.

I have had this happen to me too many times that I am becoming disgusted with the field as a whole. If this is what is acceptable, I have no confidence I will be treated any better once I graduate. All of this pain, ghosting, jumping through hoops and for an UNPAID internship, throwing salt in the wound. This field is disgusting.
