How Long Have You Been Dancing?
I have consistently been dancing now a year. I'm one of the newest dancers in my classes usually. How long have you been dancing and when did you feel confident in how you moved?
Waxahachie, TX - Scarborough Hollow - One day only!
I'm excited to announce that we've been booked for the first time ever at Scarborough's fall event. One day only, October 3, four shows somewhere between 1 and 8 pm. It will be my first large performance since spinal surgery earlier this year.
How do dancers shorten their songs?
There’s a song I want to cut, it’s about 5 mins long. I‘ve tried looking for shorter version. I’d ideally like it to be 3.5 mins long. Is there any tool I can use to shorten, say cut out a chorus?
Apparently I’ve been shimmying wrong for 20 years??
I took a workshop with Zoe Jakes recently and she said her shimmy is glute driven not quad driven like I was always taught. I’ve been trying so hard to switch to my glutes and keep my quads quiet and it’s just not happening. It feels like my glutes are rock solid when I’m standing even when my knees are bent. I can sort of do it if I’m sitting or laying down.
I have more than 20 years of belly dance experience doing raqs sharqi and ATS but only started doing fusion about 5 years ago.
Any tips on getting my glutes freed up for shimmies?
My recent Nagwa Fouad inspired performance! :)
this choreography was created for me by my teacher, Rahil of Kansas City. I had a lot of fun performing it!
SADAF KIM WORKSHOP
Kim is coming to Atlantic City this October! She’ll be teaching and performing at Sadaf Oriental Dance Congress, including her workshop “Power, Precision & Rhythm: Technique + Drum Solo.” 🥁
Anyone else planning to attend? ✨🥳
How Did You Discover Bellydance?
I'm curious- where did you first encounter bellydancing?
This is a legendary video that got me started doing Kawliya and by extension bellydance because I finally found the confidence by watching these women.
This is from a DVD that showed a dance session called Jalsat Iraqiyah or Iraqi sessions in English. The dancer in red who stole the show is Juana Al Aseel professionally but her real name is Bushra Rashid allegedly. She has inspired me beyond measure to learn these dances and I hope this makes your day a little sweeter. Dance on ladies💜⭐
P.S. she also demonstrated Kawliya does not in fact require long hair 😌
The discourse surrounding khaleegy when a certain Cheeto went to Abu Dhabi really bothered me.
This is the khaleegy dance that the background dancers are doing btw they look gorg in their dresses and they're so beautiful 💜💜
If you don't want to read the story below no pressure 👍🏽
If you didn't see when he who shall not be named went to Abu Dhabi and that was a lot of people's first introduction to khaleegy.
Instead of asking people from the culture what dance it was it got memed into oblivion and people said the girls looked possessed and it was scary. I got flashbacks to white kids saying my food at lunch as a kid was smelly and that was the same energy the dance got in my opinion.
Just to be clear khaleegy isn't my favorite dance I find it simple but I also find it beautiful I'm half Emirati so I grew up doing this dance at family gatherings. It's elegant in my eyes and I know everyone won't agree or share my opinion but people were disrespectful and meming someone's culture especially with something like dance is always a jerk move.
I have a cousin who is black American and we recently met in the past three years we never knew each other existed but we're the same age basically and she loves dancing too. I showed her the dances of West Asian culture she was so respectful and now lives them as much as I do. We live far away from each other but she dances Kawliya and shaabi even better than me now. She cared to learn and approached the culture with a healthy curiosity instead of looking at it like a spectacle. She researched about them even more than what I told and showed her also.
The Internet is free and has connected so many people across countries there's no excuse for people with access to the Internet and so much educational resources to have such a weird adittude towards other cultures dances.
P.S. the leaders in the Gulf can choke on a fat one but that's a post for another sub.
How to make engaging belly dance classes?
I have been dancing for a few years now and I am thinking of taking the leap to teaching. I tried it a few years ago and didn’t enjoy it too much. I feel I sounded quite nervous and didn’t explain things in the best way and I’m not sure that it was enjoyed. I’m now looking to expand myself as a dancer and share my knowledge whilst helping others get more active. I feel more confident in my dance and in general these days.
There is a dance studio with mirrors in city that is available for rent.
Any advice on teaching - all aspects welcome. How can I teach in a clear way, that people will enjoy and make them want to return , how can I advertise classes for maximum reach? Thank you
Questions with some clothing
So I (25F) married to my Turkish husband (26M) living both in Algeria obviously, recently I've been wanting to surprise him with something more of his country, being belly dancing, I was wondering where to could get a "Bedlah" here, any help would be nice and thank you :D
Making a galabeya
Any seamstresses here? I'd appreciate your input!
Rather than buying, I was thinking of asking a local seamstresses to make some simple galabeyas for my students, for a performance. There's a fabric shop not far from me and apparently its really affordable. Having absolutely no knowledge of sewing, lol, I was wondering is it a fairly simple item to make? I know there are different designs, so the easiest design would be best. I don't know the seamstresses rates as I've not approached her yet. As it's student group, I want to keep costs down. Last time I checked the galabeyas online have shot up in price, so I was curious as to whether getting them made would be a solution! I imagine I'd need a pattern for her too.
Any suggestions gratefully received
