On the evening of May 11, 2026, my friend and I were enjoying a peaceful after-dinner walk with our small dogs in Fintry Provincial campground.
Suddenly, we saw a pit bull charging at us from site 135, dragging a leash behind it.
The pitbull slammed into me, knocking me to the ground with my dog in my arms.
My friend saw that the pitbull had my dog by the tail.
She then saw a man and a woman run from the campsite. The woman tried unsuccessfully to restrain the dog. The man managed to wrestle it off me and drag it back into their campsite.
Fortunately, my dog suffered only one small abrasion on her hind end. I had scrapes on both of my feet and ankles and later developed bruising on the left side of my body, painful enough that I couldn’t lay on that side for a few nights.
While I’m grateful that we weren’t seriously injured, the event was terrifying.
I’ve spent the weeks since the attack writing emails, making phone calls, asking questions and waiting for responses. Here’s what I’ve learned:
• Regional District dog control officers have no jurisdiction in provincial parks and are powerless to help.
• RCMP cannot lay charges as there was no criminal act.
• Fintry park attendants seemed shocked and wanted to help; however, the operators/management demonstrated very little concern or empathy.
• Parks BC has the authority to impose “monetary penalties” on campers whose pets are not under control, but to my knowledge, they have not.
• I was told by park attendants that the aggressive dog would be banned from Fintry Campground, but how this would be implemented is unclear. I proposed to the Minister of Environment and Parks that dogs entering provincial campgrounds be registered with their license number, just as vehicles are. That way, there would be a system for keeping track of dogs and identifying them. To date, I’ve had no response to my suggestion.
If you, your children and/or your pets enjoy camping at Fintry Provincial Campground (or, to my understanding, any provincial campground in B.C.), please be aware.
If you are attacked by a dog, you’re on your own.
