Tell us your story

In 300 words or less, tell us about your interest and your life. You can choose to write about events in your life, your family, your passions, your role models, your goals or the challenges you have experienced.

2: Growing up, playing the guitar and badminton have always been my biggest passions. All my life, I’ve imagined them as two different things, like parallel lines moving forward with me, but never crossing paths. Having these hobbies was like having two different lives; one where I play badminton in tournaments, and one where I’d sit by myself and play music in my room. I’ve never realised how similar they were until I met a senior through my school’s mentoring program. Like me, he played both guitar and badminton, but unlike me, he saw the connection between the two. I remember him saying, "They’re actually more alike than you think; they both push us to try harder, whether that's through regional tournaments or performing guitar in front of a crowd for a competition”. His words stayed with me, and over time, I began to realise just how much both pursuits have challenged me to strive for my best. Moreover, these passions have shifted my views on the world. I have learnt that "Success never happens outside of your comfort zone." Only by challenging yourself every day, whether it's through your academics or hobbies, will you continue to thrive in all aspects of your life. Nowadays, I continue to dedicate myself to both music and sport, but I’m also searching for more role models and like-minded peers. People like my senior mentor and students who share the same ambition as me can inspire me to keep growing, hear from different perspectives and become a more open-minded person. I truly believe the Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program will allow me to find the mentors and people that I'm looking for, while also offering me opportunities to continue challenging myself and shaping the way I see the world.

3: I still remember those golden days, living in a small home, where my grandma (WàiPó), my grandpa (WàiGōng) and I would go down to the mulberry and plum tree in our backyard, picking and eating fresh fruit. My parents were rarely at home, most of the time on business trips or working overtime. So, the duty of care fell into my grandparents' hands. I vividly remember spending most of my childhood with my grandparents; they've been with me for my whole life, and we all share memories. Although I haven't spent much time with my parents, we've still shared our ups and downs, and our relationship is stronger than anything. Growing up, my grandma has always been my role model; she always talks about how she studied hard to make it out of the rural mountains of Jilin, China. Naturally, not only her, but our whole family values my education and academics. From when I was very young, I was told that having a good education is vital and it builds the foundation for success. Of course, my parents also valued my extracurricular programs, so at a very early age I was put into guitar, badminton and mixed martial arts lessons. My life was all perfect; I couldn't have asked for more. Until one day, I came home from school to receive news that my mum was in the hospital after suffering a Stage 1 NSTEMI heart attack. It felt like a huge obstacle was in my life, I remember just breaking down into tears at the front door. The event was both horrifying and overwhelming, but, it made me realise the importance of medical care and the fragility of human health. I can still clearly remember the meticulous work of the surgeons and doctors in the operating room, noises faintly bleeping every second. With the help of medical professionals and surgeons, she has made a full recovery. This event has sparked a fire inside of me; it inspired me to give back to the community, it drove me to help others. In the future, I hope to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others, just like how they helped my mum.

note these are two editions so like 2 different drafts, tell me which one is better, THANKS.
