What book(s) would you recommend to a foreigner?

I'm seeing World Cup fans absolutely immersed into our culture, but I want to encourage them to go deeper with our classical literature. Let's say they're back home and our classics are in their libraries and bookstores in their native language. Which ones would you recommend that would still hold up to this day and why?

I have many, but I'm curious on your suggestions.

A short tribute to Ishmael & Queequeg

Hey Dickheads. I just want to say that Herman Melville has created the greatest bRomance in American literature.

"Better sleep with a sober cannibal than a drunken Christian."

Is he really that fat?

I got A LOT of comments on my post about if Mr. Chips can eat flaxseeds saying that he is too fat to have any more seeb. I put him on my bathroom scale to weigh him, and I get an error message.

Did Mr. Chips really break my scale because he is too fat? What diet should I put him on?

Do you think Moby Dick is so engrained in our culture?

I was talking to a colleague the other day about this. Even if they didn't read the book, I feel like almost every American knows SOMETHING about Moby Dick. Whether it be the plot, "Call me Ishmael", Captain Ahab, Moby Dick himself, yada, yada, yada. Even Starbucks Coffee is a Moby Dick reference (for some reason). My colleague seems to disagree due to young people not knowing.

I'm just wondering if anyone else agrees with me.

Can he eat this?

I got this bag of seeb simply for me, but Mr. Chips is dying to have some. If so, how much of it should make up his diet?
