I've wanted to build a local media company for Britain for 2 years. Today I watched the eclipse and it made me question everything I've been "advised" to do.

Need a Quick thought.

I’ve wanted to build proper local media for Britain for two years now. Not your average tech newsletter Local news, the way it should be, to help people know what’s happening in their own communities.

I love writing since I was in high school. want to make a difference to make a well know valuable and valuable media company for people of great Britain.

Everyone I ask tells me the same thing. Narrow down. Choose one topic, not a whole country.

I watched the eclipse with my neighbours this evening. People who have never spoken to each other, all outdoors, looking up at the same thing at the same time.

That’s the feeling I’ve been trying to build a company on. Not a question. A location.

I have no audience. “Here, no one knows me. I’ve sat on this for two years half-convinced I should shrink the idea to make.

Anyone gone against the niche advice and built something broader anyway? Did it actually work?

How would you grow a newsletter focused specifically on UK tech? 🇬🇧

I’ve started a newsletter focused on UK tech news, startups, AI and interesting stories from the British tech scene. What really matters for Uk tech.

For those who’ve grown a newsletter before, what actually worked for you?

Especially interested in how you got your first few hundred subscribers and what you’d do differently if you started again.

Would love to hear your experiences!

Why still unpaid?

Petrol costs more than 160p a litre.

Unpaid tech internships are still legal.

Place those two side by side. The maths doesn’t work.

We’re asking graduates to work for free when it costs more than ever just to get to the office.

To tackle misuse, the government established a new agency. They didn't ban it yet.

So legally there was no change. Well, almost everything.

More graduates are taking up unpaid jobs, not less than a few years ago. Not because they want to. Because saying no feels like you’re falling behind everyone else.

I also get the founder's side. In early stages cash is tight and a paid intern is a real cost pre revenue.

But if only people who can afford starting a job without pay are able to start a career it is not a meritocracy. That’s a filter for people who already have money.

If it costs someone £40 a week in fuel to turn up, is “unpaid” really free?

I got fed up of this. I finally gone with beehivv to create a helpful something for you.

A UK-first tech newsletter for practitioners, delivered every other day, built on original analysis rather than aggregation. We tell UK tech professionals what changed, why it matters to their work, and what nobody else bothered to dig into.

I'll help you make better decisions and spot opportunities before everyone else not just keep you informed.

Which platform is best for start building a newsletter media company?

I've finally decided to start building a UK newsletter media company, focusing on business, tech, finance, and the stories that actually matter.
I'm stuck on one decision...

The platform itself

I've looked at Beehiv, Substack, Kit, Ghost, even Mailchimp.

It seems every creator swears by a different one.
Some say Beehiv is built for growing.

Others say Substack's network is unbeatable.
Then some people say Ghost gives you total control from day one.

If you had to start all over today, with everything you know

Which platform would you pick and why?
I would love to hear from people who have actually used them (including what you wish you knew before committing).
