What makes good autonomous AI?

So I've been at it on my own game, and ankle-deep into developement, it then hit me, my AI doesn't feel alive at all. So I want to gather some feedback: what actually makes AI good enough that it can exist even when you aren't in the same room with it? What makes something feel "alive"? I personally feel like good AI is something that has its own personal objective other than to just hunt the player all the time, though I'm interested in hearing other unique ideas or takes on the concept.

What makes a good enemy AI in stealth games?

So been grinding for a couple of months on a project to learn some game dev; it primarily focuses on stealth and avoidance, with combat sprinkled in here and there. So I wanted to gain some insight from people who are into this system way deeper than I am. So what makes a good AI for stealth? What types of triggers make you feel concealed from an enemy? What specific things do enemies do that create immersion that really cement that idea of a stealth game? I've played games like Hitman: Blood Money, and I'm thinking about playing Hitman: Absolution pretty soon. The AI in those games is pretty polished and seamless. Though the inspiration for my project is pretty different compared to those games, I just wanted a little more understanding of how to make good AI.
