Deciding between MYS and M3P AWD

I’ve been debating back and forth for a while on which Tesla to buy for my Guelph to Mississauga daily commute (approx. 120 kms) and have narrowed things down to the Model Y Standard vs. the Model 3 Premium AWD. Both cars land in the budget range I’ve set for myself.

The Y provides the obvious practicality advantages that come with the larger cabin and trunk space vs. the Model 3 AWD. The majority of the luxury amenities that are stripped out from the base Y (nicer seats, glass roof, faster acceleration, etc.) don’t bother me too much… but I would be sad not to have the killer audio system in the Premium 3.

The main areas that give me the most pause are the differences in battery chemistry and winter driving safety.

I like that the LFP battery in MYS can routinely charge to 100%, but my home and work parking are both outdoors, and my work doesn’t have charging stations available, so I worry about driving a cold-soaked battery home at the end of each day and how that will impact worst-case real-world range.

I’ve been a snow tire advocate for years (Michelin X-Ice has always been my choice), so I’m not as concerned with the snow/ice stopping ability of the MYS, but having never regularly driven a RWD car in winter, I worry about how the car will drive in the worst of the weather we see in southern Ontario… my daughter is 17 and neither her nor my wife are confident winter drivers… that really gives me the most pause.

I’m curious to hear what the experience for drivers who have had RWD Teslas over multiple years have been… I’m guessing a good analog to the MYS would be all the RWD Model 3’s with LFP batteries that are out there.

Looking for glasses suitable for someone who runs hot

I’m looking to invest in a pair of high-quality glasses after seeing a fellow player take one pretty bad in the eye last week.

A couple challenges on my end:

  1. I run very hot and fogging tends to be an issue for me with glasses.
  2. I inherited my dad’s cro-magnon orbital ridge, which I think contributes to the fogging issue, as standard glasses tend to lose some upwards ventilation sitting under the ridge above the bridge of my nose.
  3. I live in Canada, so 30-day trials from US companies are either not available or you lose shipping and taxes, so I’m hoping to get my purchase right the first time.

I’ve included a pic of my current top prospect… the new-ish Synergy model from Ria, which look like their a replacement for their Model One. I can’t find any reviews of them.

I like the idea of the Ria’s almost frame-less design that will hopefully help with the forehead/fogging issues.

If anyone has had similar concerns and has found something they like, I’d appreciate if you’d share.

I tried out a pair of 3M Solus glasses as a budget option, but they did fog up on me and I found the optics were less than ideal… due to the quality of the lenses… there is a noticeable amount of distortion and glare looking through them.
