They truly love not being able to pay for their basic needs.
How prominent was the use of French during the 19th century in New Orleans?
When I was reading about P. G. T. Beauregard there was a detail about his life that caught my attention: He only learnt to speak English at age 12 when he attended school in New York. Obviously he coming from a rich family made everything easier and I'd not be surprised if the only reason he didn't learn English sooner was because his family had bilingual servants that'd take care of everything that needed to be done in English. But I still find it weird.
What was the "life expectancy" of a junior officer during the American Civil War?
In the movie "Glory" there's a scene that shows Battle of Antietam and in it we can see junior officers standing in the very front of the line for a pretty extended amount of time. This came to me as bit of shock because that being the case, I assume lieutenants and captains had horrific casualty rates. Not only for standing at the very front, but also because they were valuable targets. And while it does makes sense for leaders to be at the front so they can organize the troops more efficiently, it's also a counterintuitive to place them in a position where they can be killed so easily.
First time approaching a girl!
I was walking around my city when I saw a cute girl, the street was pretty crowded and she had just met with a friend of hers so I just walked away. I headed to the Art School (I don't study there I was just seeing the place) and Bam! She's there with her friend. I just walked pass them. A few minutes later I sat on a bench while telling myself I should've approached her, 5 minutes go by and I see them again, about to walk right in front of me. When they got close, I nervously stood up and simply said I thought she was beautiful and that I couldn't let her go without saying hi. She giggled a bit, gave me a thumbs up with both hands and said she appreciated the compliment while we both laughed a bit about the situation. In the end she wasn't interested. I said "No problem" I sat down again and they walked away.
I'm really happy I finally had the guts to cold approach a girl, even if it did not have the best ending.
