The soldier's body had been returned from Russia as part of a prisoner exchange. While experts have found grenades on the bodies of deceased soldiers before—previously hidden by Russians in their pockets—this was the first time an explosive device was discovered embedded inside a body. The grenade had entered through the abdominal cavity, passed through the body without detonating, and lodged under the right thigh.
