The original four thirds 70-300mm f/4-5.6 ED lens is probably the best budget birding lens available

Olympus Zuiko Digital 70-300mm f/4-5.6 ED used on an EM1ii.

I got the lens for $120 on eBay in perfect condition, and a 4/3 to m4/3 adapter for $25 on Amazon. 600mm equivalency at f/5.6, and the lens is sharp (obviously not as sharp as OM’s pro lenses, but insanely sharp for how much it costs).

Sure, the AF is not as fast as modern lenses but is still plenty fast for birding, it’s a normal DSLR AF speed (so long as your camera has phase AF). Plus, this lens has a minimum focus range up to 0.94m at 1:2 production which can allow it to do pseudo-macro.

I can’t think of anything with quality and reach at this price point.
