Experiences with switching platforms for higher IQ/Noise?

I'm might be a bit of an odd one out for saying this, but I never bought m/43 for portability but more for Olympus/OM weathersealing, the 300mm F4 for its size (Edit:the only thing I prefer being smaller) and price and the 90mm macro.

I have a 12-40 f2.8 with an Olympus EM-1 Mk2 as my first set-up. But I've been thinking about selling the 12-40 because I realized I would rather have a 45mm 1.2 prime and a UWA f2.8 zoom instead.

However, I also realized that this might be a good time to figure out if I should stay in the system before investing further. So i've been contemplating the Nikon Z5ii or Z8 and the Fujifilm XH-2.

Truthfully, im indifferent to what makes Fujifilm popular. So, I only care about their red badges and big lenses.

These are the main lenses I care about: UWA f2.8 Zoom, flagship macro, and a prime lens of 600 mm for wildlife.

New manual focus mode on my pi camera

I just implemented a new manual focus assist mode for my camera using picamera2 and opencv. It’s a selective focus peaking mode that’s less distracting than full screen focus peaking. It’s still a work in progress and would love your feedback.

Is it just me, or does this finally explain why MFT gets a bad rap for sharpness?

I’ve always been told to avoid high f-stops on my G9 because of "diffraction," but I never actually understood why it happens so much earlier than on full frame. Just saw this video where he compares pixels to floor tiles and it actually made it click. Do you guys actually stick to f/5.6 as your "ceiling," or is this overblown?

Fireworks with OM-1 and 12-60 3.5-5.6

First time I’ve ever shot fireworks. These were quite distant so I had to crop a lot. The 12-60 kit lens did pretty good…the only other lenses I have are the 60mm macro and 300 f4 so the kit lens got called up. Used live composite for the first time. The hardest part was manually focusing. Fun experiment!

Oldies but Goodies

E-M5.3/FT Sigma 30mm f/1.4 EX DC HSM - It isn't worth going out of your way to find and buy, but if you see it listed for around $50 on a used marketplace, you should definitely purchase it. On PDAF models, the AF speed is decent, aside from occasional AF fail by a rattling sound. Common to Sigma FT lenses, they tend to malfunction when the camera battery is running low. In the case of this lens, the aperture blades moved randomly.

3/4 Complete for First M43 Kit

I had preordered (late May) OM-3 Astro, lens, and the two astro filters as my first foray into Micro Four Thirds system. I use Nikon DSLR & astrophotography specific telescopes/camera systems.

Today I received the filters and lens in two separate packages. I am excited. However, no word on the camera body itself yet. I wonder why OM System just didn’t ship everything at once in a single package when all became available? Wouldn’t it have been a cheaper and more efficient method? Oh well. I’m still glad to have some the gear now to make it more of a reality.

I‘m really surprised just how small these in body filters are, not having ever seen or used this type before.

I am also surprised just how lightweight the lens is.

I bought the H&Y filter mount to use with this specific lens in the event I want to use the OM-3 Astro for regular photos with a UV/IR Cut filter. I’m also debating on getting a regular OM-3 or OM-1 Mk II body with a couple more lenses maybe if a good sale happens.

Well, at least I’m 75% complete. lol.

FYI, plain old leather works quite well for those who had crumbled/peeled grip on Olympus cameras

The rubber on my Olympus E-PL1 just crumbled by itself, so I made do with a tan piece of leather to match the og look, it's just a test piece and I do plan to redo it for a cleaner fit. What do you guys think?

TTartisan 23mm f1.4 on GX85 - First Week Impressions

I recently got the TTartisan 17mm f1.4, and I've been really enjoying it. Then the TTartisan 23mm f1.4 and 25mm f2.0 both went on sale, so I figured I would just buy both and compare them, and keep whichever I preferred. I'm still in that comparison phase as I haven't had a lot of time to go out shooting lately.

These photos are from just two outings, one at golden hour, and the other in twilight. Part of my goals with these lenses are to do more low light shooting, so I wanted to test that capability first. Sharing some highlights with this post, and there's a full album here:

https://flic.kr/s/aHBqjCYmTS

All of these are straight out of camera except the flower photo, which I edited a bit in lightroom (because it was underexposed). In the album, all the edited photos are indicated in the file name, the rest are SOOC. I primarily used the Natural and Vivid profiles for these.

  1. A demonstration of the color rendition, nothing to complain about here. I believe I shot this on the 'Vivid' profile, so there's a lot of saturation added by the camera.
  2. So far I've been happy with the ability to capture night scenes like this handheld, and with a reasonable depth of field. ISO-800 for this one, which I find to be quite usable on the GX85.
  3. The edited photo in the bunch. This was probably shot around f2.0. I'm mostly impressed with the sharpness and detail in the foreground white flower, and I find the background softness / bokeh quite pleasing. The lens flare is great too, I've gotten a good bit of variability in flare performance, so it seems like a good lens for experimenting with flare.
  4. Chock this one up to perfect lighting, I think pretty much any lens would give good results here. Of note is the sun star, and the 3D pop of the image in general, those are aspects other lenses would render differently. I'm guessing I shot this around f5.6.
  5. I'm pretty sure this one was wide open at f1.4, and on the Natural profile (much tamer colors). Happy with the detail and soft focus fall off.
  6. Another at ISO-800, and on the Natural profile. Bit of motion blur to the image.
  7. Didn't have much time to prepare for this shot, so I'm happy enough with how it turned out. Most likely wide open at f1.4, ISO-800 again, and a bit of shutter drag. What a whip!
  8. I shot this one intentionally out of focus, and just love the result. Very painterly forms and colors, and the warm flare really adds a lot.

My general thoughts at this point are that I quite like the lens. Looks good and feel nice to use, the controls are pleasantly dampened. The ~46mm FFE field of view is quite familiar to me, as it feels about the same as shooting my vintage 24mm lenses, and the results are in the same ballpark as well. If I had just bought this one without comparing it to the 25mm f2.0 I think I would be quite happy with it. At present I'm leaning towards keeping the 23mm f1.4 and returning the 25mm f2.0, but I need to spend more time with the later before committing to that decision.

One thing I really don't like about both lenses - they jump from f8 to f16. A lot of my photography is shot in harsh midday sun, and for those sessions I'm frequently switching between f8 and f11, which is not an option here. Maybe that's something I'll get used to, maybe not, time will tell.

EDC in addition to a G9?

So I adore my G9 but lately I've been flirting with the idea of getting a smaller body to be my EDC. I was looking at some Fujis and Sonys but I quickly disregarded the idea cause that means getting into another whole system, I would love to be able to share lenses between my primary workhorse, the G9, and a smaller body.

I've been looking at GX85/GX9, quite a few available close by for about 700-750 AUD.

I know the dynamic range and overall image quality compared to the G9 is far lower on a GX85 for example, but would you guys still recommend getting one for 700 AUD, is it still worth it? I don't really care for any bells and whistles, I just want a compact carry. I do really appreciate an EVF though. There are a few EM5 mk2 bodies available as well for a bit cheaper, how are those compared to the GX lineup?

on a sidenote, Panasonic please make a modern GX:(

Thank you
