Trying to understand a Marvel Rivals anti-cheat ban: Steam Input, gyro, reWASD, and two denied appeals.
That’s essentially all I know. I made a post on June 23 on r/marvelrivals wondering why I was banned. I assumed it was because of my Gyro setup, but it’s also possible that it was because reWASD was on my device. The point of this post isn't really to ask for help to get my account back, it's more so to see if anyone else has had similar experiences and had to use the same appeal process.
I’ve been playing Marvel Rivals since the closed beta and have around 750 hours in the game. I’ve had reWASD on my device since 2021 so I could use my Nintendo switch pro controller (my only controller) to play Epic Games, namely Genshin. I received a temporary penalty for a “Keyboard and Mouse Adapter” around June 19-21. I assumed it was my gyro setup since, from a spectator’s point of view, gyro gameplay looks similar to mouse and keyboard. However, I realized reWASD might have been the culprit as well. So the next time I played Rivals, I kept gyro but made sure (to the best of my ability) that reWASD was not running. Then I was banned for 100 years for the same reason. Since I had been playing with gyro controls and reWASD on my device for months without issue, I'm still unsure either of them were the cause of the ban. I never used reWASD to modify my Rivals gameplay.
The worst part of this situation is the appeal process. The Marvel Rivals website doesn’t have a dedicated support page. In order to appeal a ban, you have to go to their discord and message a bot that gives you a temporary link to their support portal. Then you can make an appeal. The weird thing is, when you submit your appeal, the support portal immediately displays a generic message saying the account cannot be restored due to multiple reviews. However, the ticket itself remains in a "To be evaluated" state for several days before being marked complete. (This might only be for login suspensions). They don’t email this to you, it’s all in the support portal. My first appeal was pretty bad. I was mostly confused and desperate to figure out how to get my account back, so I gave them a screenshot of my Steam input gyro setup, the ban message, and I asked them “My account has been suspended until 2126 because a Keyboard and Mouse Adapter was detetcted. Is there any way to resolve this? I play marvel rivals using controller gyro aiming. Is this a violation of the rules?” In hindsight, I realize my first appeal didn't include many details because I still believed my gyro setup was the likely cause. I didn’t see their immediate automated response for 4 days since I was expecting an email. That automated message was the only communication I got so I emailed marvel_rivals@global.netease.com directly with questions and a request for a manual review, but they told me to use the support portal for everything related to ban appeals. So I decided to submit another appeal detailing my setup, reWASD’s presence on my computer, my history with the game, and a specific question of what the game flagged so that I wasn’t making any assumptions and so that I could avoid this happening again if I made a new account (which I got explicit permission to do in an email conversation with marvel_rivals@global.netease.com). The exact same thing happened with that new appeal. As soon as the appeal was submitted, I received the same generic message from the first appeal.
"Dear player, Thank you for contacting us. We appreciate your continued support and understanding. We understand your desire to have your account unbanned, but after multiple reviews, we regret to inform you that we cannot restore your account. We hope you can understand this decision. If you have any other game-related questions or suggestions, please feel free to reach out to us. We would greatly appreciate any feedback and evaluation of our service. Thank you once again for your understanding and support."
This entire situation is unfortunate, but there are 2 things that bother me deeply. First is the lack of transparency. When I received mt first temporary ban, if the game had told me that a remapping software or unusual controller inputs were detected, I would have known how to fix the problem. Furthermore, the support team never answered my question about what caused the ban. I've removed reWASD from my computer, but what if something else I don't know about caused the ban? How am I supposed to follow the rules and make a new account if I don't know what I did wrong? I understand that real cheaters exist and telling them what triggered the anti-cheat is dangerous, but "Keyboard and Mouse Adapter" is quite vague. The second thing is the speed of escalation. My first ban was for a relatively short time (8-24 hours, I'm not sure) and the next ban was 100 years. This leaves absolutely no leeway for people who have been wrongfully banned. These 2 things combined made for a horrible experience for me and I don't know whether to give up or try and get into contact with a human to figure out what really happened.
Any thoughts or experiences you guys have had would be appreciated. Do you think reWASD could have triggered the ban despite not being a problem for a while?
