Walking a Basset

Me and Tilly again! She comes home with me in a week but after reviewing the comments on my first post I have more questions.

Having owned large strong breeds I favor a pinch collar. Please no lectures on how bad they are - I had great success with them to the point where the dog naturally healed when the pinch collar was on - and it is one of the safest ways to walk 300 lbs of dogs - I even got a tiny one for my Boston and it has been helpful! A few corrections and they walk like champs.

A basset is a tank - I imagine quite strong and can pull - but I always see them in harnesses which are a terrible tool for a Bully or any dog you’re trying to correct bad walking habits with -

How are they walking? Do they ever lunge or pull in a way that you feel you need more control? I expect my dogs to heal and walk loose leashed by my side - am I off my rocker thinking it would be the same with a Basset?

I also saw that “deep and narrow” dishes are best so they don’t get their ears in their food or water - of course I have all shallow dishes for short nosed dogs - What do you recommend?

Thanks for all of the feedback! I’m excited for this new chapter!

I just committed to adopting a Basset in need of a home . . .

I’ve had four American Bulldog mixes, a mastiff mutt and most recently I rescued a Boston Terrier. I’ve never met a Basset. Or a hound. Just some Beagles. The Boston was a curve ball but the Basset is like a whole new species. I am fascinated by this breed that can put 76 lbs into 15” of stature. She weighs more than my American Bulldog mix who has a block head and chest to match!

She had had an amazing life and is six years old. She currently lives with a pug and two cats peacefully. We have two cats, a young Boston and 14 yo Bully. She comes home with us in a week after a pack meets and greet last night.

Tell me about this breed! I never appreciated that purebreds had such distinct personality traits until I adopted the Boston - but he is a clown, he loves to fetch, he’s high energy and fun- he loves to tease us. True to the breed.

What are Bassets like? What should we know? What should we watch out for?

Hot weather and Bostons

We live in a cool climate but I’m traveling to the Midwest heat dome with my 22 lb 2 yo Boston. Since we are accustomed to 60s it’s gong to be a tough transition.

I read that Bostons are not able to cool off by panting - in fact the panting can over heat them.

Any tips or tricks on what to watch for and how to respond if there appears to be a problem? I know the obvious things- but my dog pants now when we hike - even if it’s 55 - how does overheating look different?

Thank you!
