Wrong UPI payment of ₹5,100 – SBI raised a P2M chargeback, receiver bank is investigating. What should I do next?

Hi everyone,
I accidentally transferred ₹5,100 through super.money on 28 September 2026 to the wrong recipient. I immediately started contacting the banks and raising complaints, but I still haven't received my money back.
Here’s what I have done so far:
SBI (my bank): Initially, SBI told me there was no option to raise a chargeback for a wrong merchant UPI transaction. However, after further escalation, SBI raised a chargeback under “Goods and Services Not Provided (P2M)”. The bank says the beneficiary bank's response is awaited within 15 calendar days.
Receiver's bank (YES Bank): After I raised the issue on Twitter/X and contacted the bank, YES Bank started reviewing my complaint. However, I haven't received confirmation of a refund yet.
Cybercrime complaint: I filed a complaint on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal.
Consumer complaint: I also raised a complaint through the consumer grievance portal.
Home branch: I requested written acknowledgement/receiving for my complaint, but I have faced delays in getting a proper written acknowledgement.
The confusing part is that SBI initially said a wrong merchant UPI transaction cannot be disputed through a chargeback, but later raised one under the P2M goods/services-not-provided category.
I understand that a wrong UPI transfer and a genuine merchant dispute are different situations. My concern is whether the chargeback category selected by SBI is appropriate for my case and whether this process can actually help recover the money.
I need advice on the following:
- Has anyone successfully recovered money from a wrong UPI payment through a bank-to-bank reversal or chargeback?
- Is the P2M “Goods and Services Not Provided” chargeback appropriate when the payment was accidentally sent to the wrong recipient?
- Should I escalate this to the RBI Integrated Ombudsman if SBI or YES Bank fails to resolve the issue satisfactorily?
- What additional steps should I take through the cybercrime and consumer grievance channels?
I have transaction details, bank complaint references, email correspondence and complaint numbers available as evidence.
If anyone has gone through a similar situation, please share what worked for you and which escalation route actually helped recover the money.
