Change in my insurance
Question about annual mileage changing during an insurance policy
I’m looking for some advice on how annual mileage works with car insurance in the UK.
When I took out my current insurance policy, I was a student and estimated that I would do around 7,000 miles over the year. Since then, my circumstances have changed and I’ve started a new job, meaning I’m now driving considerably more.
Based on my current mileage and the amount I’m driving, I’m expecting to do around 14,000 miles by the time my current insurance policy comes up for renewal.
My question is: do I need to contact my insurer now and change the estimated annual mileage on my policy, or is the 7,000-mile figure simply an estimate that gets checked at renewal?
I’m also wondering how insurers actually verify the mileage. My car had an MOT about six months before I bought it, so presumably the mileage is recorded on the MOT history. Would the insurer be able to compare that with the mileage at my next MOT/renewal and see that I’ve done more miles than originally estimated?
There was obviously no intention to give an inaccurate figure when I took the policy out — my circumstances genuinely changed after starting a new job.
Would you guys recommend updating the policy now, or just declaring the correct mileage when I renew?
Thanks!
