I figured out my sleep problem cause after a few years

I'm running a personal experiment that's been going for a few weeks now, and I have some very interesting results.

Short version: my water filter (reverse osmosis) is affecting my sleep. It took me about 3 years to reach this conclusion, which is why I'm only running the experiment now.

My personal insomnia type is this: I don't have trouble falling asleep, but I wake up after a few hours (or early in the morning, usually with an urge to pee) and then can't fall back asleep.

I saw a post related to fixing insomnia with electrolytes some months ago, and I started taking electrolytes daily for a few weeks. I saw some sleep improvements but still had nights with insomnia. Then, a month ago, I took a vacation abroad, and during the vacation I was drinking mostly bottled water. I noticed that during the vacation I did have good sleep. Afterward, I was thinking about what could be making the difference. Somehow it hit me, while thinking about that, that it could be the water (since I was already experiencing improvement with electrolytes).

Cause: the filter doesn't remineralize the water enough. I also got a TDS meter, and here are my results:

  • before filtering: ~50 PPM
  • after filtering: 10–15 PPM
  • various bottled waters from different suppliers: 150–350 PPM

So far, what I've found is that the World Health Organization recommends a minimum of 50 PPM.

How is it affecting my sleep? At 10–15 PPM, the water is almost distilled. The body tends to eliminate it as quickly as possible — I wake up at night to go to the bathroom, and afterward I can't fall back asleep.

After some weeks of drinking bottled water, I no longer wake up during the night, and I don't have the urge to pee like I used to.

Interesting observation regarding Reverse Osmosis filter

I’m doing a personal experiment for a few weeks and I have some very interesting results.

In short: the RO filter affects my sleep. It took me about 3 years to reach this conclusion, which is why I’m doing the experiment now.

The cause: the filter doesn't remineralize the water enough. I also bought a TDS meter and here are my results:

  • after filtration: 0-1 PPM and then up to 10-15 PPM after remineralization stage.
  • various bottled water from different suppliers: 150-350 PPM
