Iron Walnut vs. Iron Hammer Walnut

Hi guys! I see a lot of new people here mixing up Iron Walnuts (species) with Iron Hammer (variety, but is a hemp species) so I wanted to make a quick write up to explain the differences

Iron Walnut ≠ Iron Hammer Walnut

The word “Iron” in Iron Hammer does not mean that the walnut belongs to the Iron Walnut category. Iron Hammer is classified as a Hemp Walnut.

Picture 1 is an example of an iron walnut, pictures 2 and 3 are pictures of an iron hammer walnut.

Hemp Walnuts vs. Iron Walnuts

Hemp Walnuts

•	Major varieties: Lion Head, Tiger Head, Official Hat, Sizuolou, Chicken Heart, etc

•	Generally more developed texture, with thicker ridges and more defined structure

•	Navel/base is longer and tends to protrude outward from the shell, rather than sitting flush or recessed

•	Body shape varies substantially by variety

•	Most of the traditional high-value Wenwan varieties come from this category, and the shell holds its texture well over years of handling

Iron Walnuts

•	Major forms/varieties: Ingot, Iron Ball, Three-Ridge, Four-Ridge, and various natural irregular forms

•	Generally larger and heavier, with thick shell

•	Softer shell that wears down and loses definition faster than Hemp with prolonged handling

•	Usually have shallower, less elaborate texture than Hemp Walnuts

•	Typically have a small tip and a very small, recessed navel/base

•	Particularly notable for unusual natural shapes: Buddha Belly, Eagle Beak, Duck Beak, multiple-ridge forms (very common in our community), conjoined walnuts, etc.

•	The navel is one of the more useful identification features: Iron Walnuts tend to have the navel recessed into the shell, often seen in the shape of a “+”

•	Typically a more affordable category, though rare multi-ridge or “Iron Official Hat”-shaped specimens can still fetch good prices

Note that the distinction between the two is not as simple as “deep texture = Hemp, shallow texture = Iron” or similar simplifications. There is overlap. The combination of body architecture + tip + base/navel + shell characteristics is more useful and should be taken into account.

Now, about Iron Hammer specifically (my personal favorite variety for hand feel)

Iron Hammer

As mentioned, this is a Hemp walnut. It can look similar in appearance to the Millstone variety, but with a distinct hammer head shape.

Some identifiers to watch for:

•	Round, full body (should be slightly top heavy in the belly)

•	Compact/dense appearance with a relatively shallow and straight texture

•	Flatter tip and base

•	Not taller than it is wide

Anyways, this doesn’t cover everything about this topic, but hopefully this helps the community a bit :) if you have additional knowledge to share on this topic, please comment below so we can all learn more

5 months with my Starry Sky pair

Took forever the clean the deep sections, and lots of brushing to even the surface out. Finally can focus on color and even some of the high points are translucent already!

Showcase of different base colors

Hi guys, just wanted to post this to share some info and a visual reference about walnut skin base colors for those new to the hobby or who are still learning

Base color is one of the many things to look at when evaluating walnuts. Many collectors associate darker or redder skin with greater maturity, higher density, and stronger long-term patina potential, which is why red skin tends to be highly sought after. However, base color should be viewed as just one characteristic among many that will determine the final patina.

Where base color is most useful is in understanding a walnut's starting appearance and potential color trajectory. Lighter-colored walnuts often show more dramatic visual color changes over time, while darker-colored walnuts may start with more developed pigmentation. When considered alongside things such as density, maturity, shell quality, and pore structure, it can help give a better idea of how a walnut's patina may develop over time.

Both of these walnuts have only been brushed to remove hoarfrost, and have not been handled otherwise.

Current walnut collection

Currently all my walnuts, they’re waiting here until their new storage dresser comes in

I only actively play the starry sky and the iron hammers at the moment, all the other ones are still being prepped and cleaned so I won’t handle them until this stage is done.

The types here are: dà cūjīn, starry sky, jìxiàn qībùgōu, white lion head, peach pit style palace lantern, nánjiāngshí, and iron hammers are in the black bag (currently resting)
