Has anyone ever had to do the two trains problem?
Has anyone ever really had to do the two trains problem?
For example: A train leaving San Francisco and New York are both headed to St. Louis. The SF train leaves at 7:00 am going 100 miles an hour. The NYC train leaves at 8:30 going 85 miles an hour. Which arrives first?
I’ve never come across this problem in my life in any class I’ve had. I’m not asking how to solve it, I’m asking is it a legitimate problem that would be beneficial to know how to solve to make you better at math? I wouldn’t even know what branch of math would cover this.
Edit: I ask because this is a stereotypical “advanced” (like, high school or late middle school advanced,) math problem that always shows up in cartoons and tv shows. It always seemed unreasonable and unrealistic and sneakily way more complex than it first seems, to have to solve.
Edit 2: I don’t know if I explained myself well because a lot of y’all are not answering what I asked. You’re telling me why math is important. u/DrJaneIPresume is really the only one who answered it correctly.
