She’s debating if my food is worth coming to me. It’s a tomato sandwich and she decided it ain’t worth getting up.

I was only away a few days….tiniest beagle I ever had and she won’t let the rest get on my lap. She doesn’t growl or fight, but she will jump up and weasel her way between the others and flop.

When a shark is turned upside down in the water it kinda goes limp. Tonic immobility is the term. This dog will zoom for 5 minutes, jump onto me, roll onto her back, and chill. Then, off again…

Not all beagle owners appreciate hunting. But you get muscle tone, a waist line, and a calm house dog after a few hours of running. Let’s see your fit beagles in comments.

Anyone have beagles that get to chase rabbits and do the things beagles were bred to do? Makes for happy hounds!

Leash tugging? See body of text below.

I don’t think this is a “trick” or a “tip” because I have seen guys in the hunting beagle world, including my dad, do this for as long as I can remember. But I see people frustrated with dogs that tug hard on a leash and then they go into that reverse sneeze/gag sounding thing and it frustrates folks. I’ve seen people get a harness to stop the collar from being tugged into the throat, and that really allows a hound to pull with all the pressure on the front legs and shoulders. This little leash wrap can stop the tug, most beagles ( 😂 ), because pulling tightens the lead around the torso and they will ease off on the tension and walk a little more like a dog not bred to charge into briars. Oftentimes at field trials they have beagles in the field waiting to compete next and they can hear the pack currently running a rabbit. If you think a dog tugs hard on a leash when it sees a sparrow fly, it is nothing compared to a beagle hearing other beagles chase a rabbit. Beagles “hark in” or pack and they have no idea why at a trial they have to wait their turn when usually they are encouraged to hark in to the pack.

Day 7 of not taking beagles afield to chase rabbits. Without a dozen miles of rabbit tracks per day they get the zoomies. This photo is after chaos. I couldn’t do the inside beagle thing without rabbit chases long term….

According to the date on a picture it was 41 years ago today that I brought home my first beagle pup (on the left and dad bought the one on the right) purchased for $75 from money saved where I make 15 cents per delivered copy of The Erie Sunday Times.

These are hunting dogs. There is a myth that hunters are the culprit for all the beagles in shelters. Some, yeah. But also suburbanites who buy a cute puppy that grows up to be a hound. And labs, who test on the gentle breed. These bounds of mine do what they are bred to do. And are cherished pets.
