High level men’s league game with some former pros playing in it.

Runner is attempting to steal 2nd base, and the throw goes into center field. Runner then advances to third base, while the ball has gotten past the CF. With the ball still not picked up in the outfield, the third basemen fakes a tag and keeps the fake tag applied for roughly 3-4 seconds.

Runner then realizes he does not have the ball, and tries to score, but is thrown out at home.

I did not rule obstruction on the play. After the game I spoke with some of the players and no one was quite sure about what the ruling would be. The argument can be made that the fielder impeded the runners ability to advance, however I cannot find anything concrete for this ruling.

Would love to hear some insight.

UPDATE: I believe the league uses NFHS rules.
