Will Joe Abercrombie's The First Law Trilogy fill the void after having finished Game of Thrones?

Will Joe Abercrombie's The First Law Trilogy fill the void after having finished Game of Thrones?

I finished the Game of Thrones series recently and feel like I need more. I've heard that The First Law can come close. What do you think? Are the dialogue, political intrigue and characters on par or not?

How it felt understanding all the Japan references of the Rim

How I felt when I immediately understood that "gahja" was inspired by the japanese word "gaijin" which means foreigner 🥀

How I pictured certain characters Part 2

  1. Rhone as a clone from Star Wars the Clone Wars. Greys in general give off clone vibes.

  2. Ash Lord (Iron Gold) as Darth Vader without the mask. >!The scene in which Magnus was about to die reminded me of Darth Vader's death scene for some reason.!<

  3. Dancer as some guy from Final Fantasy 7. I have no idea why, but this was just the vibe Dancer gave me. I know that Reds are supposed to be Irish so this technically doesn't really work but whatever.

  4. Aja au Grimmus as a female warrior from Black Panther. Pretty self-explanatory.

  5. Alexander au Arcos as Alexander the great (modern and romanticised depiction). Same name and I believe Alexander is supposed to be good looking.

How I imagined some characters while reading

Some random associations I had while reading:

  1. Lorn as Juste Bellmont from Castlevania. I think this one is a perfect match.
  2. Cassius as the guy from Disneys Rapunzel. With gold hair and eyes + more curly hair this is a pretty good match too
  3. Mustang as Historia from Attack on Titan.
  4. Quicksilver as Lex Luthor from Superman.
  5. Pliny as that one general of the Empire. They give off a similar vibe of a right hand man with considerable power himself.
  6. Theodora as whatever the name was from Psycho-Pass. As a rose, Theodora would be more beautiful, but this still worked in my head since she's supposed to be a bit older.

Ranking all the books

I finished Lightbringer yesterday and couldn't stop thinking about it so I thought I'd share my thoughts on the series here. As you can see by the fact that the lowest tier is still S-tier, I love all the books. The tiers themselves aren't ranked.

I think I'm part of the minority that likes the first trilogy more. Not because the second trilogy is worse, but because the first one just connected with me more. Mainly because of the plot of Darrow going undercover as a red in the society of the golds. I absolutely loved this premise + the characters of the first books and I was on the edge of my seat most of the time. Seriously, the first two books were some of the most exciting books ever for me. The emotions I felt when Darrow revealed his true identity to Mustang were on another level. And let's not even talk about the ending of Golden Son.

As for Morning Star, in my opinion it had some pacing issues and I also am still conflicted about the writing of the final plot twist regarding Cassius choosing Darrows side. It's good in theory but Darrows thoughts when Cassius "betrayed" him and Mustang earlier made no sense. Those final pages of MS were different though, almost made me cry.

Iron Gold was great too, I liked all the new POV's, but it's also the least exciting book in the series. I especially enjoyed Lysanders chapters. Lowkey shipped him with Seraphina 👀.

Having Dark Age this low might be a hot take but I had issues getting into it. One reason for that were all the new characters that got introduced (Ajax, Atlas, Kalindora, Glirastes etc.) which was a little confusing. I'm also not the biggest fan of Atlas coming out of nowhere and apparently being the mastermind behind everything. And the return of Adrius and Lilath is definitely one of the weaker twists of the series.

As for Lightbringer, I really enjoyed both the battle of Phobos and the rim arc. Victra killing Ajax was also so satisfying. Same goes for Darrow and Fa.

Favourite characters:
First trilogy -> Sevro, Mustang, Darrow
Second trilogy-> Cassius (although I disliked him in the first trilogy), Victra, Diomedes

Is there a reason Armenia is less obsessed with its flag than its neighbours are with theirs?

Not complaining, I just noticed that compared to the neighbouring countries there are less flags on the streets in Armenia. Especially compared to Turkey and Azerbaijan who are kind of obsessed with their flags but you'll also find more georgian flags in Tbilisi than armenian ones in Yerevan (at least in my observation). Don't know how it is in Iran. Personally, I think that treating a piece of fabric like it's holy is weird, no matter the meaning.
