Hi there, i recently started playing mahjong at my local card shop and discovered its highly addictive.
Im currently playing American mahjong but I've been doing research on Chinese mahjong and discovered that I find Chinese mahjong to be easier to understand and possibly more affordable...
I recently bought a mahjong set from my local target and realized that the national league association card was not included; this led me down a rabbit hole, finding out tons of background information including the fact that the card has to be purchased from the official site. This led me to the problem of wanting to play American mahjong but unable to afford buying 4 cards evrey year.
For context, my local card shop recently started having mahjong Mondays.
They even hired someone to teach and provide material so we could play with no issues. However mahjong being addictive as it is, has definitely made me want to try playing more and more with my friends on days that were able to get toghther, that are sometimes not on mondays. Since we don't have access to national league cards it is hard to actually play. This led me to looking for alternatives. I eventually found Chinese mahjong and Japanese mahjong and Hong Kong mahjong. Out of the 3 Chinese mahjong seemed to be the easiest to make sense of. The only problem and why I am making this post, is the fact that no one person online has definitive rules or scoring hands for Chinese mahjong. I understand this is because in different regions? Areas? In China they have different rules and different ways of playing.
So im hoping to find someone that can help me find a video or site that can teach me a simple mahjong variant that doesnt require national league association cards to play. So that way me and my friends and any other friends I have that want to learn can easily jump in. If anyone can help it be much appreciated, so far ive found a variant where you only need 3 pung and a pair to win and you can use chow or chi as well to make a hand. Im not sure how to math out using kong but im sure it can be done. This simple way of not following a forced recipe like American mahjong is what im looking for. But im also looking for how to score hands that are made this way. Also just a small rant, I somewhat understand flowers but Im a bit confused because I know there extra points and if you draw them on first hand you put them face up and draw another to replace it. Do I need them? I know some mahjong run 136? And others 144 and American 152. Idk hopefully this is making sense. Also sorry for the typos and grammar, I was never good at it plus im half asleep. Thanks again
