Bankart tear and hill-sachs lesion- should I get surgery?

I feel like I’m faced with a difficult decision. Three weeks ago I dislocated my shoulder from a fall and had it reduced at the hospital. It’s the first time it’s ever dislocated and not gone back in on its own, but I’ve had it either partially dislocated or have had subluxations that have always gone back in on their own Im just not sure how many over like 15 years. I am about to turn 26.

The MRI showed a bankart tear and a hill sachs lesion- my orthopedist said it was a pretty nasty dislocation and recommended I get anthroscopic bankart repair surgery and a remplissage but is okay with me starting physical therapy first for four weeks to see if that helps.

I’m struggling because currently I’m not in a lot of pain, my range of motion is basically back to normal other than the far end of certain motions. But I also think in the last 3 weeks I had two subluxations or small moments of instability. But otherwise I’ve been able to go on with normal activities without it feeling constantly unstable I’m just coming to learn that that doesn’t necessarily mean anything.

So I’m unsure of what to do. Should I get the surgery? I’m afraid of dislocating it again and having even more damage. But I’m also not an athlete so I’m unsure of what to do.

Please give me advice!

First time dislocation- What to expect?

I’m hoping for some advice here! Saturday night I dislocated my shoulder for the first time- I’ve had instances where’s it’s kind of partially popped out and popped right back in but nothing like this. It was several hours before it was relocated in the E.R and it was terribly painful.

All they said in the ER was to wear a sling for 2 days but that doesn’t seem to be what most others experience? I’m not really in much pain now- it’s definitely sore but I have no idea how to tell if there is any other damage or if the lack of pain means I’m okay? I can’t tell if it feels stable or not or if it feels like it could slip back out.

I know I have to follow up with an orthopedist but I have to wait for some insurance stuff through work as it was a workplace injury. I am just feeling a little lost until then because they gave me practically no information in the ER

OCD has focused on uncertainty as a concept

Has anyone else’s OCD basically turned to focus on uncertainty as a concept? It’s like my brain took the recovery concept of “learn to accept uncertainty” and made it the ultimate malicious compliance.

It’s like my brain says yeah that’s right every single little thing is completely uncertain and you will never actually know anything so maybe everything is pointless or wrong so obsess about that instead.

It makes me feel like I’m losing my mind- like the whole world shifts on its axis or like I don’t know up from down anymore.

I know I have to deal with it just like any other “theme” but I’m feeling so frustrated and alone in this

Experiences with Prozac?

Hi all
I just prescribed Prozac for my ocd and I’m wondering what people’s experiences have been on this medication?

I’ve never taken any medications before and I’m honestly quite nervous to start. While my ocd feels relentless and tiring and deeply affects my mental quality of life I’m pretty functional in the sense that I can hide it really well so I wasn’t sure if I even needed it.

I’m sure I’m overthinking it but I guess I just want some input from those who’ve experienced it.

Existential OCD Experiences

Sometimes I feel like I don’t see existential ocd talked about as much on here and I’m so curious as to what other people experience with this theme. I think I experience it in a lot of different ways. How do you all experience this or have in the past?

For me I sort of get stuck often panicking about my future and wondering what my true purpose is or if I have one or trying to figure out exactly what the rest of my life will look like. I have a ton of fear of regret or ruining my life or other people’s lives. Most of the time it goes back to the question of “what if life isn’t worth living” which terrifies me and I spend all of my time ruminating about these things. I end up spending a ton of time trying to predict the future or trying to figure out time itself or trying to figure out the right thing to do to fix it. And the more I can’t the more the fear feels true.

But I also have a ton of doubt around who I truly am and what it means but I’m also constantly doubting my own internal experience and constantly questioning what’s real and what isn’t or what the truth really is. Even though I doubt necessarily question my physical reality I end up feeling like I lose my grip on reality and it gets incredibly scary. It’s like a question of my motivations, all of my feelings, how I perceive things. Even as I write this I am questioning if I actually experience this or not and it makes it feel impossible to feel comfortable in my own skin.

Lately it’s kind of become about uncertainty itself. Like I’m so painfully aware that everything single thing is uncertain and I’ll never really know anything and I get that feeling again that I’m losing my mind or losing my grip on what’s real or what I should do. Like every road map to how to live is completely gone and I start panicking about what the point of everything is.

Overall I feel almost less afraid of death itself than living badly or that life itself is terrible or I’ll do it wrong and then die for what. Or I’ll cause other people’s lives to feel like this. The thoughts get extremely dark at times and it’s definitely frightening

How have you all experienced this? Also exposure help is deeply appreciated! None of these thoughts ever feel like they leave my mind so the exposure piece has been tough.

Do you tell the people in your life about your ocd?

Hi everyone! Has anyone else been able to essentially hide their ocd and mental health struggles from everyone in their lives? I have never told anyone how much I struggle— I got diagnosed with OCD almost a year ago and I haven’t told anyone about it. It’s been so so lonely and both suffering with it and the recovery have been so hard but I feel so afraid to tell people in my real life which makes me hide it which makes me not do exposures as often as I need to be doing. But for so many years I’ve been struggling SO much and it’s been so lonely.

Of course I’m grateful I even can do this and that it’s not so debilitating that I can’t but it even makes me doubt the disorder itself which is so frustrating.

Either way I just don’t know if anyone else has the same struggle— keeping my symptoms hidden feels like exhausting in and of itself on top of the ocd and the erp I’m trying to do.

If you have told people in your life how did you tell them?

Thanks!
