Ecoboost Pony and Dark Horse
I tell people all the time that an aftermarket intake really isn't necessary on the EcoBoost Mustang. Ford already gave these cars a very well-designed factory intake system that can support the engine's airflow requirements without becoming a meaningful restriction at the power levels most people are running.
But every time I explain that, I get the same response: "Yeah, but it makes it sound better."
Honestly, that's probably one of the weakest arguments you can make for an intake on a turbocharged four-cylinder.
We're talking about a 2.3-liter turbo four-cylinder, not a naturally aspirated V8. You're not suddenly going to transform the exhaust note or give the engine some exotic, aggressive sound. What you're primarily doing is making the intake side of the turbo more audible. You hear more induction noise, turbo spool, and that familiar "whoosh" when you're getting into the throttle or lifting off.
If that's what you like, great. There's absolutely nothing wrong with installing an intake because you enjoy the sound. That's a legitimate reason. Just don't confuse more audible with better sounding.
Personally, I'd rather spend the money where it actually makes a measurable difference. On the EcoBoost, the factory intake is already capable of doing its job extremely well. If you're chasing additional power, there are other modifications that can provide a far more meaningful performance benefit.
So when someone tells me, "You need an aftermarket intake because it sounds better," my response is simple: You don't need it. You like the sound it makes. There's a difference.
And on a turbo four-cylinder, making the turbo's whoosh louder isn't exactly the same thing as making the engine sound better.
Next up, a cover for that ugly coolant reservoir
Just a heads up for anyone interested: the Ford Performance Calibration is now available for the 2026 model year.
Just had the Ford Performance Calibration installed on my 2025 EcoBoost Mustang and wanted to share my experience for anyone considering it.
The entire process from purchase to installation was honestly flawless. I ordered everything directly through the Ford Performance website and had the kit shipped straight to my local dealership. One feature I really liked was the ability to prepay for the installation during the ordering process. That completely eliminates the possibility of the dealer adding surprise labor charges or markup when you show up for the appointment.
The install itself was quick and painless. I arrived at the dealership at 7:30 AM and was back out the door by 9:30 AM.
First impressions on the drive home were extremely positive. Honestly, this feels like the way the car should have come from the factory if Ford did not have to design it around 87-octane compatibility for the masses.
The car is noticeably quicker from 0-60, but where the tune really shines is in midrange power. Passing traffic and merging onto the highway now feels effortless. The throttle response is much more immediate, and when you get into the power, the car pulls hard and pushes you back into the seat almost instantly.
Even already cruising around 70 mph, the engine still pulls aggressively when you roll into the throttle. Traffic prevented me from taking it much beyond 90, but the car was still pulling strong and felt like it had plenty more left.
Now, is this the absolute most aggressive or highest horsepower tune available for the EcoBoost? Obviously not. There are more powerful custom dyno tunes out there. But for me, the fact that I retain warranty coverage on a four-month-old car makes this the perfect upgrade. It gives the car the extra performance it should have had from the factory while still maintaining OEM reliability and support.
Who knows, maybe a few years down the road, I will revisit things and go with a full custom dyno tune. But for now, I am extremely happy with this setup.
