My favorite plugins for note-taking

The number of available plugins seems to stabilize a bit and most of them now incorporate the permission system. I have installed and tried out (almost) all of them, just for fun, and I am still impressed by the creativity of the authors. For every new plugin installed, I had to disable or remove another one, due to the set limit of 10 active plugins. A limit that is very welcome, otherwise one simply loses track.

I use my Nomad almost exclusively for writing and taking notes, at home and in the office. After months and months of installing and removing plugins, these are the ones that have remained on my device and are used pretty much daily:

  • Superdashboard
  • SNFolio
  • Align
  • Make space
  • Restyle
  • Sticker

Then there are three other very useful plugins, that are used somewhat less frequently:

  • Clipper
  • Listsorter
  • SN Draft

I have still room for one more plugin: suggestions are welcome! 😄

The SNFolio plugin: very good!

The SNFolio plugin (link) brings together everything that I was looking for in a calendar app/plugin: pleasant and attractive design, easy addition of tasks and events (tasks can also be displayed on the calendar if so desired), logical navigation and lots and lots of settings and additional features. It took me some time at first to understand how to use and get the most out of it. In the end, everything is actually quite simple and straightforward.

The plugin offers an additional feature (PARA) to keep all notes, events and tasks related to a particular project together. This requires some additional experimentation, to make sure that I have understood all options well. It looks very promising.

Earlier today, I got a bit sidetracked when trying to add an Outlook calendar file (.ics) to the plugin. This did not work at first, due to some incompatibility between the plugin and the standard Outlook .ics file (link to post). In the mean time, I have solved the problem using AI (Lumo). I have also created a (daily executed) task in Windows that automatically updates and converts the agenda.ics file into something that works for the plugin, which is then (manually) copied to the Nomad and subsequently imported into SNFolio plugin.

Conclusion: I find the SNFolio plugin very useful: it is well and attractively designed and easy to use. It will change and make more effective the way that I'm using my Nomad.

Thanks to the author for developing another effective plugin and for sharing it!

Problem with SNFolio plugin

The SNFolio plugin is very nice looking and cleverly designed. Unfortunately, it does not work on my Nomad with a Microsoft (Outlook) .ics-file that was added through the option <Add a Calendar>.

According to AI, the problem lies in the Microsoft's .ics file. After adjusting the .ics file, based on the AI-suggestions, all calendar events are now normally displayed in the plugin's calendar. The AI came to the following conlusion:

"The SNFolio's event parser fails on Microsoft's timezone scaffolding. The moments your events referenced TZID=W. Europe Standard Time backed by that VTIMEZONE with year-1601 dates (the Windows FILETIME epoch quirk), the parser couldn't resolve the timezone reference and discarded every event. Strip the VTIMEZONE and TZID parameters, and the same events parse fine."

This problem can maybe be resolved in the SNFolio plugin? (I do not know anything about programming myself). My solution for now is to simply adapt Microsoft's .ics file every time before adding it to SNFolio. It would be much nicer though if the plugin could deal directly with Microsoft's .ics files.

(By the way, it would also be nice if the plugin also allows for using the 24:00 hour notation, but that is a very minor point).

[Edit: added the AI-conclusion on why the it is not working with Microsoft's .ics-file]

Very positive experiences with plugin SuperDashboard

I have used the SuperDashboard plugin for a few days now. It is listed on the plugin list, although that links to an older version of the dashboard plugin. It is the first plugin that really improves my work flow; very cleverly designed, completely configurable and looking very good! As a dashboard, it allows easy access to folders, notes and documents and also makes it possible to generate lists (of stars, keywords) and to display text clips (selected pieces of texts in notes that can be added to the dashboard).

For example, you can select the folders in which stars should be looked for: the dashboard shows the star symbol + the accompanying text from/in the note. Several lists can be set up next to one another. So now I have a list of ToDo's planned for today (listed in my daily agenda.note in the folder 'planner') and a list of ToDo's that can be done later. Those ToDo's are starred texts in my daily notes, created from taking notes during meetings and phone calls. These daily notes are kept in a different folder. This makes for a very useful separation! The stars shown on the dashboard can also be deleted: the stars are then removed from the original note, while leaving the actual text in the note undisturbed.

There are many more interesting features offered by this plugin. Long story short: I'm using the Nomad with this plugin much more efficiently than I have done in the past two years. Such a dashboard proves to be very useful in the process of daily note-taking. Supernote's great idea of plugins is fantastically well implemented by the author of the SuperDashboard plugin!

Adjusting an existing plugin with no programming skills what-so-ever

I have been using a few plugins very regularly in the process of taking notes. One of these plugins, let's call it X, has not yet been updated to incorporate the permission-feature. In fact, this plugin was created quite a while ago and the author might have moved on to other programming hobbies. However, I really, really wanted a plugin with the same functionality to function under the latest beta (3.29.44).

So, with absolutely zero programming skills, I decided to have a go and try to adapt the plugin myself, using Lumo (AI). I fed it plugin X, I fed it two plugins that were already updated and I fed it Supernote's information on plugins. It was a lengthy process that went deep into the night. During this process, Lumo has become 'a dear friend of mine' (ridiculous and scary, this personalisation of AI!). But in the end, I got what I wanted: a plugin with the same functionality as plugin X! Wow! I was super impressed by myself, sorry, by Lumo.

This new plugin is of course purely for personal use. Once the original plugin has been updated, I will delete my personal plugin and download the original one. But for now, I have the same functionality again, as before.

Altogether, it was a super interesting and fun process to go through. It is a bit scary though, that people like me, without any, I repeat, without any programming skills are 'able' to develop a plugin using AI. Next step; learn some basic programming skills and try to make my own plugin from scratch (if only I can find the time)

First impressions of the 3.29.43_beta

The new customizable menu is great and looks very neat. Now I can place my most used menu items (pen, lasso, undo) in the top right corner of the screen. Most importantly, all necessary menu items now fit in the horizontal menu dock. Plugins can be added to it as well! Getting the extra room in the menu bar is also due to the new and very clever feature of calling up a page-menu and an text-insert-menu by merely holding the pen tip down on screen. A very nice feature!

The previously installed plugins do not function anymore (that was clearly communicated, so I knew). That is a pity, but no problem, just a matter of waiting for the new and compatible plugin versions to be published. I have deleted all non-functioning plugins and have installed the new (games) plugin from the Inkhub. Gives me something to play around with at work.

Flipping texts horizontally and vertically works fine as well (I doubt whether I will ever use it).

Altogether a very nice upgrade!

The one thing still missing in Supernote's software is the perfect shape feature; it works for lines (which now also displays the angle when rotating, very nice!), but not for circles, rectangles, triangles and other geometric shapes. That means that when I'm doing some math, I still need to go back to one of my other devices. However, looking at all the software developments in the past two years, I'm sure and hopeful that also this feature will be incorporated at one time.

p.s. I just found out by accident that stickers can be used as headers as well (!?). Probably not a new feature, I just did not know. That feature can result in very creative graphic tables of contents, nice!

Cada sets sold next to Lego sets

Yesterday I visited a toy store (in the Netherlands) where they sold not only Lego sets, but also Cada (and Reobrix) sets. This was for me the first time that I saw Cada and Lego sets together in one shop: on the one side of the aisle Lego sets and on the opposite side Cada sets. That means that people are now able to directly compare Cada with Lego, price wise and design/picture-on-the-box wise. The toy store is part of an international franchise of toy stores, but displaying and selling these Cada sets was an idea of the shop owner (you cannot find Cada products on the toy store's website). This is a great development and surely the parents will notice the huge price differences between the two brands. They do not only sell the smaller Cada sets, the ones around 20-25 euros, but also the big ones, the Mercedes AMG One and GT3. Very nice development!

Nomad wifi-connection trouble, help!

Has anyone faced problems with connecting their Nomad to wifi and (how) were you able to solve them?

My Nomad gives me trouble in connecting to wifi. This is becoming a time-consuming distraction. Most of the time it works without any problem. In the past two years of ownership it would connect to wifi normally, except once every one or two weeks, when it would either not connect al all or lose the connection a few seconds of connection time. Now it is almost every day...

All my other devices (e-readers, ipads, laptops) work fine on the same wifi connection, it is just the Nomad that gives me trouble. It won't even connect to a mobile hotspot next to it...

[Update: after a factory reset of the device and having turned off and on again the modem, the connection is working for now (on the 5 GHz band, I did not even know that this was possible...). However, if or when the problems start again I'll force back to 2.4 GHz]

Game stack: great fun building it and it looks amazing!

The Game stack is my first Lumibricks set. It arrived a couple of days ago. The whole thing, box, manuals, electrical stuff, it all looks very nice and very professional. Everything has been put together with an amazing attention to detail and everything breathes quality. It surpassed my expectations, although I knew beforehand already that it would be good, having watched some videos.

I've now completed the first seven building steps and the building experience is great. Good quality bricks, a large number of totally new kind of bricks with all kinds of shapes. Everything fits well together. The wiring is very easily built in and everything connects well. The light effects can be enjoyed already after just a few building steps which makes the continued building even more fun.

I'll probably be getting some more of these neon city sets; they look great!

Slowly progressing, the Mercedes AMG GT3

Progress until today

Every few weeks I can just spend some hours on building this fantastic model. Today step 6 was completed. The build is very technical with quite a few challenging steps, it requires some concentration while working on it and, in other words, it is great fun!

Progress made today
