What mistakes did you make starting out that you wish someone had warned you about?

I'm relatively new to prepping and have worked through the wiki, and have about a month's of supplies saved up. One thing with the wiki is it tells you what to do, not what people actually get wrong in practice.

So I'm curious about others experience, looking back at when you first got into this, what were your biggest mistakes? The stuff you wasted money on, the shiny new gear item you bought that will probably never get used, or even things you made a priority that should have been lower on the list.

Hopefully we can all learn from each other's collective learnings! Appreciate any honest stories and answers!

Get home bag for European city commuters

Most get home bag stuff I see is US focused, they have their knives, gun, bag in the car boot. A lot of that seems irrelevant to most of the EU. Personally, I'm 20km from work and take the bus; plus, carrying a weapon here is illegal anyway.

I want something that fits EU city life, should be compact enough to take or leave at work in a locker and legal to carry daily. Mostly useful if the buses stop and I'm walking 20km home.

So far I've added some decent walking shoes, water and a filter, power bank, paper map, cash in small notes, basic first aid (ibuprofen, band-aid), headtorch, snacks, and a jacket.

Anyone else keep a get home bag? And if you've got no car to stash gear in, how do you handle it? Is there anything I'm missing on my list?

When planning your food storage, do you just count total calories or do you balance macros and nutrients?

I’m looking at my food storage and its pretty heavy on grains and pasta (oops). When you are adding food to your storage, do you just aim for a specific number of total calories per person and don't care for the source? Or do you actively try to map out your foods across different macronutrients (making sure you have enough protein, fats, and carbs) and maybe even micro-nutrients?

If you do track the breakdown, how do you manage it? Does it change what you decide to stock up on? Curious to hear others way of doing things!

BENELUX bug-in/bug-out discussion

I am based in the Netherlands which has a high population density almost everywhere in the country. Of course, Belgium has a little more room but I wanted to know what peoples general consensus is if something like major civil unrest were to break out.

I have a pretty good stock of food and water and basic preps to keep me going for a month or so but being surrounded by so many people who do not have that is a concern for me.

I am curious about what others thoughts/plans are in highly populated areas/countries are?
