Entire charging system shat the bed out of warranty but BMW picked up the tab

I just got my 2022 xDrive45e back after six weeks at the dealership. My X5 had suddenly stopped charging, throwing errors every time I tried to charge it. The initial diagnosis was a failed KLE (charging control module), and I was quoted $4700 for a repair. I gulped hard and okayed the repair, only to get a call a few days later with bad news: KLE replacement was ok but the AC compressor had failed. Total was now going to be around $10000.

A few days later, another call said that it wasn't actually the compressor, but a new cable that was needed, which would be less expensive. But the cable wouldn't be in for 2 weeks.

Eventually, the dealership ended up bringing in a BMW engineer to troubleshoot the problem. Ultimately, they replaced the EME, EKK, KLE, and the cable from the EME to the KLE. The total: nearly $15,000.

Thankfully, given that the car was just 7 months out of warranty, BMW decided to comp 95% of the repair cost, so my total was $1500 (I had to pay the entire sales tax).

I'm really happy with the outcome given the size of the repair, and this is the kind of corporate action that gets companies customers for life.

Happy Constitution Day from Park Ridge, Illinois

My Chicago suburb has a parade every year for Constitution Day.

I don’t know why, but it’s fun watching it every year.

Happy Constitution Day!
