Credit Score/Preparation

Hi, my boyfriend wants to apply for the CHP academy. I have been reading stuff about credit scores. Does that count against him only if he has stuff in collections or is it bad credit in general? Also, what would be considered bad credit?
I wanted to see if anyone has any tips to prepare to apply to the academy. I have read that they go around and ask neighbors questions about you. Our neighbors have always been standoffish to each other. We are getting ready to move in a month or two so not sure what our options will be. He is looking into becoming a Juvenile Hall CO in the meantime. Would it look better for him to work in this field for about a year and then apply. He is 21, with no prior experience in the law enforcement field. The exam is on 8/15, we have about two months to choose to schedule the date to take the exam.
