I applied for the Canadian Forces Reserves and I’m honestly pretty confused right now.

My medical and background checks are still in progress, and I had my interview today. I originally applied for Combat Engineer because that’s what I really want.

But during the interview, the captain told me that Combat Engineer isn’t available right now. Instead, he offered me other trades like Infantry, Cook, Armored Crew Member, and a few similar roles.

The issue is, I’m not really interested in those trades, and I don’t want to join something just for the sake of joining if it’s not what I actually want.

Now I’m stuck wondering: should I continue with the process and accept a different trade, or should I just step back and wait until my preferred trade becomes available (if it ever does)?

Has anyone been in a similar situation? What did you do?

I immigrated to Canada 7 years ago and am now a Canadian citizen. During those 7 years, I haven’t traveled outside Canada.

I’m currently going through a criminal record and credit check (PSPS) process, and I have my interview on Monday.

After the interview, I’d like to travel to the U.S. for one week to visit my sister, whom I haven’t seen in 7 years.

Would this trip have any impact on my background check or cause any delays in the process? I’d appreciate hearing from anyone who has gone through something similar.
