understanding CaRMS report

I'm looking at these two pages from the 2026 R-1 match data and was wondering if someone could confirm that I'm interpreting them correctly.

With the first photo, CMG application funnel by discipline, my question is, how are there so many applications? I still have some time until I need to apply so I'm not familiar with the process yet, but is there a limit on how many residency applications we can submit? Do people submit multiple and that's why there's an absurd amount of applications for each discipline - way above the number of Canadian medical students (assuming ~300 students/school x 18 schools across Canada = 5400 M4 + a few unmatched from previous year)?

In the second image, it's titled "first choice discipline." If we take dermatology for example, the ratio is 0.41 for first choice discipline. Does that technically mean the competition for derm is worse than 0.41 since people could have ranked in second, third, and so on?

For those who matched into a competitive speciality (one of bottom 6 - derm to otolaryn), what would you say was the most impactful part of your application?

Thanks in advance!

Cardiac surgery match

How hard is a 0.52 match rate?

Also, please correct me if I’m misinterpreting data, but were there 12 spots for CMG last year whereas there will only be 5 spots this year? If so, what’s the cause of this decline? Will this trend continue

Cardiac surgery

How do I match to cardiac surgery?!

People always talk abt how competitive plastic optho etc are but looking at match rates, cardiac surgery is preeeeetty close

What should I do? Do residency programs care about clubs? Do they only want genuine hobbies? Research? Presentation? Poster? Connections?

How does it compare to what med schools look for and how does one match to cardiac surgery

For back up, is it worth applying for gen surg? If so, should I be more general if I look for research opportunities/ would only having cardiac research hurt

Ik I should keep my options open but I’ve been quite set on cardiac surgery for years

Research

In undergrad most people work for free as research volunteers

Is it the same in med school or are there more chances for paid opportunities?

If I’m meeting with a PI for the first time, should I be straightforward with asking about publication opportunities or just enter the research team first and see how it goes? Ik other research activities like presentations are just as important for residency - do these opportunities come naturally?

The research team I was in undergrad was SO slow and did not result in any publication during my three years of free labour there and I would like to avoid the same

21F pls fix my TFSA

Idk I just feel like I have too many holdings. Single stocks are great until they become pain in the ass like Microsoft which is one of my oldest holdings yet it’s doing awful!

Should I just let it go and buy something else? I also do want to get rid of USD holdings. Should I sell all of them or keep some?

What abt zgld - bought it when it was too high cuz it was doing well in my non registered. Who knew it would drop so much?
