Am I the last person to find out that Swallowing the Sea was originally called Drinking Ice?

I just learned something that broke me: Tun Hai (Swallowing the Seas) by Huai Shang was originally going to be titled "Yin Bing" — Drinking Ice.
It comes from a line of Chinese poetry: "Ten years of drinking ice, yet the blood remains hot."
It means someone with towering ambition cannot be crushed by suffering. No matter how long the darkness, the fire inside never dies.
And I immediately thought of Wu Yu. Twelve years in hell with no light. And yet he never once let go of the belief that he could claw his way back to the sun. That he deserved the sun.
That realization hit me so hard it honestly felt like fireworks exploding in my chest!😭😭

There’s something devastatingly beautiful about these “beautiful, strong, tragic” protagonists — characters who are scarred beyond repair, but still remain gentle, stubborn, and fiercely alive.

After that, I started desperately searching for more novels with this kind of character setting.

Here are some of the absolute best ones I’ve read so far:

Huai Shang's damage collection:
Po Yun (Breaking Through the Clouds)
Tun Hai (Swallowing the Sea) — the origin of this spiral
The Deepest Color of the Night
Qing Long Tu Teng (Azure Dragon Totem)
Lantern: Behold the Bayonet
Lantern: Reflection of the Peach Blossoms

Priest & powerhouses:
Mo Du (Silent Reading)

Liu Manpo — one hit, maximum damage:
Yan Wang (Yama/King of Hell)

Tang Jiuqing's political devastation:
Nan Chan
Qiang Jin Jiu

Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou — I'll never recover:
Yu Wu
Husky and His White Cat Shizun

MXTX — classics for a reason:
Mo Dao Zu Shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation)
Tian Guan Ci Fu (Heaven Official's Blessing)

Others that destroyed me in the best way:
Zhao Qin Mu Chu by Zhonghua Shuoshuren
Professor, Do you Want Suppressants? by Huang Chuan Dai
The Whole World Is Waiting for Us to Break Up by Bu Shi Feng Dong
All the Dao Sects Owe Me a Favor by Qi Jing Nan Qu

Please give me more recommendations if you know novels with this kind of protagonist. I’m completely addicted to this trope now.

This book made me realize my mattress has a problem

After finishing several super intense, high-tension novels back to back, I decided I needed something light and sweet as a palate cleanser.
So after my shower, I got into bed all comfy, opened this short little novel, and started reading.
At first I was just smiling.
Then I started giggling.
Then suddenly I was laughing so hard my mattress started making squeaky crying noises along with me!
Like:

Me: HAHAHAHAHA
Mattress: GAGAGAGAGA

God. I really need a new mattress.

But before I replace it, I urgently need to tell you all about this book because it’s SO cute, funny, relaxing, and the premise is ridiculously adorable.

Hasn’t It Bloomed Yet? — Guan Ni Ni
I laughed at the premise before I even opened Chapter One.
The shou is a rapeseed flower spirit. He gains sentience, goes looking for his own kind, and finds the gong—because everyone keeps calling him a “rapeseed flower.”
(Here’s the pun: in Chinese, yóu cài huā sounds exactly like yǒu cái huá, meaning “talented.” The gong is a genius musician, so everyone says he’s “talented.”)
Flower spirit: “Finally, one of my people!”
Meanwhile the gong takes one look at him and instantly falls in love:
“I must be experiencing love at first sight. I’m so happy I could faint.”
Doctor: “…You do know you’re allergic to pollen, right?”
Me: 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Anyway, I hope this novel brings you as much joy as it brought me.
And I hope your mattresses are holding up better than mine.

I need danmei recs with REALLY good angry sex scenes

Maybe this is oddly specific, but a recent novel I read had a scene like this and now I’m suddenly obsessed with finding more 😭

I need danmei recs with really memorable angry sex scenes. The “we’re furious with each other but also completely obsessed” kind of dynamic. Emotional tension, power struggles, messy chemistry — all of that.

No strong preference for setting or trope. Modern, historical, xianxia, anything is fine. I just don’t want BE. Please share your favorites 🙏

Guys!! I really need to share this with you—this book is SO good. The gong and shou are absolutely obsessed with each other, it’s intense, sticky, and honestly kind of deranged levels of love!
It’s Pregnant Tentacle Gong Goes to Which Department?
It’s literally about a jellyfish-like creature who falls in love with a human and then just decides to become human. He cooks, tries to live a normal life, even goes to college with him while not understanding basic algebra. At some point he hears that having a kid makes relationships more stable and just goes “okay” like that’s a normal conclusion.
The later child-rearing daily life is a bit more low-key, but it’s still very sweet—so good. I spent two wonderful days with this book, and I hope someone else enjoys it as much as I did.

Bei Nan recently shared in the latest bonus chapter that she has been diagnosed with moderate depression and is currently undergoing treatment. I’ve heard of quite a few authors affected by similar conditions having to pause writing, such as Fu Hua, the author of Her Mountain, Her Sea.

Is it due to external pressure, or the internal stress of creative work itself? It’s honestly sad to see.

I just hope they can all recover soon and find their way back to writing when they’re ready.

I’ve read quite a few dragon stories before, but these three are especially light and sweet. My face hurt from smiling while reading them lmao

After The Abyss Dragon Woke Up by Sang Wo

this one is just pure comfort lol. Shou is the last dragon in the world, and after molting he turns into this tiny shiny silver dragon. he’s ridiculously strong but also scared of pain, loves snacks, loves games, hates studying… basically a spoiled baby dragon.

and the Gong?? he has dragon slayer bloodline but ends up completely devoted to him. like this man is out there working hard every day just so his dragon can roll around in piles of treasure. the dynamic is actually insane in the softest way possible.

Si Jiao by Shang Ling

the main characters are so fun here. Shou is this kind of arrogant, lying little villain (a flood dragon), and gong is upright and super strong but keeps overthinking everything and basically talking himself into being in love.

their interactions are just… really cute. lots of bickering, lots of misunderstandings, but in a very light and funny way. it’s the kind of story where you don’t even realize you’re smiling the whole time.

The Dragon Lord is Weak and Helpless but Has a Big Appetite (Interstellar) By Hei Tang Zhu Suan Mei

i finished this in like 2 days lol it’s ridiculously sweet. Shou is a super powerful dragon lord but cries easily, gong is a protective space hunter who would absolutely fight the entire universe for him.

the whole thing feels like a soft little fairytale but in space. a bit dramatic, a bit over the top, but in a very comforting way. it honestly gave me “cute dragon + bravest princess (but make it male)” vibes.

if anyone has more soft dragon recs pls drop them!
