Am I the last person to find out that Swallowing the Sea was originally called Drinking Ice?
I just learned something that broke me: Tun Hai (Swallowing the Seas) by Huai Shang was originally going to be titled "Yin Bing" — Drinking Ice.
It comes from a line of Chinese poetry: "Ten years of drinking ice, yet the blood remains hot."
It means someone with towering ambition cannot be crushed by suffering. No matter how long the darkness, the fire inside never dies.
And I immediately thought of Wu Yu. Twelve years in hell with no light. And yet he never once let go of the belief that he could claw his way back to the sun. That he deserved the sun.
That realization hit me so hard it honestly felt like fireworks exploding in my chest!😭😭
There’s something devastatingly beautiful about these “beautiful, strong, tragic” protagonists — characters who are scarred beyond repair, but still remain gentle, stubborn, and fiercely alive.
After that, I started desperately searching for more novels with this kind of character setting.
Here are some of the absolute best ones I’ve read so far:
Huai Shang's damage collection:
Po Yun (Breaking Through the Clouds)
Tun Hai (Swallowing the Sea) — the origin of this spiral
The Deepest Color of the Night
Qing Long Tu Teng (Azure Dragon Totem)
Lantern: Behold the Bayonet
Lantern: Reflection of the Peach Blossoms
Priest & powerhouses:
Mo Du (Silent Reading)
Liu Manpo — one hit, maximum damage:
Yan Wang (Yama/King of Hell)
Tang Jiuqing's political devastation:
Nan Chan
Qiang Jin Jiu
Rou Bao Bu Chi Rou — I'll never recover:
Yu Wu
Husky and His White Cat Shizun
MXTX — classics for a reason:
Mo Dao Zu Shi (Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation)
Tian Guan Ci Fu (Heaven Official's Blessing)
Others that destroyed me in the best way:
Zhao Qin Mu Chu by Zhonghua Shuoshuren
Professor, Do you Want Suppressants? by Huang Chuan Dai
The Whole World Is Waiting for Us to Break Up by Bu Shi Feng Dong
All the Dao Sects Owe Me a Favor by Qi Jing Nan Qu
Please give me more recommendations if you know novels with this kind of protagonist. I’m completely addicted to this trope now.
