Trip report [kennywood, Pittsburgh, PA]
I arrived at Pittsburgh Int'l at 5:30a. Was at "rope drop" at Kennywood at 11a. We visited this park in July of 2019, opening weekend for Steel Curtain. I was sore from a concert in Cleveland the night before. It was hot. The toddler run operations didn't help. Needless to say, I was a bitch and opening weekend jitters played no part. I was harsh and Kennywood and Pittsburgh left a bad taste in my mouth. Seven (7) years later I have a much better outlook and want to share.
Steel Curtain (x6)
Honestly, top 5 coaster for me. I went straight towards SC upon entering. It was pretty much a walk on. 5 - 10 minute wait for most of the day. Rode front twice, middle once and back row three times. Back row was the best in my opinion. Front is great for the vie but the forces are so much stronger in the back. I abhor being stapled so I always flex my thighs and legs to buy a little bit of room. Absolutely the way to go on this one. Last element out of the stall tried harder and harder to throw me out of the ride.
Phantom's Revenge (x2)
First ride was around 11:30 and second ride, last of the day, was at 2:30. The heat influences this ride like crazy and the second ride was as unhinged as a Pittsburgh city bus. Fuckin' zoomin. Loved it. Still my top ride at the park, mostly for the interaction with Thunderbolt. Would have gotten more rides but we marathoned this when we were out in 2019 and I wanted to get in rides on SC and others.
Black Widow (x1)
Best frisbee out there. So smooth and just a chill ride. Great way to break the heat.
Swing Shot (x1)
Janky S&S screamin swing but can't complain. Ride is punchy and gives some great forces for the tummy.
Thunderbolt (x1)
Would have ridden this one more but went alone and finding another rider was too much for my anxious ass. I love this ride. The double up is still goated. this is a wonderful use of the terrain and will always be my favorite woody.
Racer (x1)
No notes. Great classic Mobius coaster.
Sky Rocket (x1)
Brutal queue. Would ride this coaster a lot more if they would supply a little shade... Reminds me a lot of Wicked at Lagoon.
Overall, Herschend is killing it with Kennywood. Ride ops, concessions, and EVERYTHING was miles better than it was in 2019. My friend got off work at 4p so I left the park at 2:30. That was a pretty good run for 3.5 hours. I am just glad I got as many rides on Steel Curtain as I did because he went down around 1:30.
