Why, just, why?

We have lived here for a little over two years and this has happened maybe 6 times now. Does anyone know why? I was told the city “flushes the water system randomly” but it seems to me it’s not very safe to flush a system into homes, especially with no warnings

Tacoma Code & Coffee - July 19th @ The Pioneer Collective

Come hang out at Tacoma Code & Coffee!

We’re a monthly meetup and casual co-working session for anyone interested in coding, tech, or community. All experience levels are welcome.

Some people bring projects to work on. Others socialize the entire time. It’s totally up to you.

At 12:30, we do an intro circle to give everyone a chance to introduce themselves, ask for help/offer help, plug opportunities/events, and get to know each other. After the intro circle, everything is self-organized.

Come grab a pastry, coffee, and make some friends. We’d love to see you there.

RSVP and details: https://www.meetup.com/tacoma-code-coffee/events/315470013/

Highland Games Training?

I've been attending the Tacoma Highland Games every year for the last 5 years and it's one of my favorite things every year. And every year I tell myself "this is the year I'm going to find out where and how the athletes train!" because I would LOVE to try it as well. But every year comes and goes and I still haven't asked...

If anyone in this subreddit competes in the Highland Games, could you please share a bit about your training program? Is there a specific gym you go to, a group program, or just on your own lifting and throwing heavy things around? I'd very much like to join the competition next year!

Thank you!!

Power Outages in Fircrest Area? (near Mildred)

Just had power flicker out for a few seconds 2 or three times in Fircrest. Anyone else experiencing the same? Any ideas why?

We have someone on Oxygen here, and power going out means we will need to use the Oxygen Bottle instead of the concentrator.

Looking for someone with a metal detector

Lost a ring, and I believe I have the space narrowed down to a 10 by 10ft area. Location is south of Tacoma. Ring should be on the surface. I am willing to compensate for this.

Or if anyone has any connection to others, or groups or organizations that may be able to help, please let me know. Thanks!

The Mayor basically got ratioed in his AMA yesterday

I missed out on it somehow. Would have loved to have asked one of the hundreds of unanswered questions.

I certainly wasn’t crazy about the fact that he told us in his intro that he’d never be back. And there were so many good questions! He’s really got to start coming up with some answers.

Also, through comments in that AMA, I learned we are not allowed public comment in council meetings except for once a month. What the heck is that about?

Pt. Defiance accessible tomorrow (7/4) in the AM?

Howdy fellow Tacopeople! My partner and I are hoping to spend some time in Pt. Defiance park (like 10am - noon) tomorrow but we’re worried with all the hullabaloo at Ruston later in the day that might be tough? Will roads be open earlier in the day and the park accessible? Thanks a lot!

Ruston fireworks tips?

We’re a couple in town for the weekend, would like to see the fireworks but know nothing about Ruston Way.

We’re staying in Proctor and have a car, but plan to walk to Cummings Park and back, check out the waterfront festivities, and just sort of wing it.

Is walking to/from Proctor and 26th reasonable? Maybe through the Puget Park ravine (at least, before dark - is it illuminated at night or more forested?) Or should we Uber/bus?

Can two people find a spot of grass to sit for the fireworks or is that hopeless? We won’t have coolers / chairs / stuff - just us.

Any bars / food to check out down there?

Thanks!

US Watch Party @ Doyle's

Anyone been to the world cup watch party at Doyle's so far and have any guess how early someone would have to get there Monday to be able to see the screen for the US game?

Tacoma Mayor AMA

Hi everyone, Tacoma Mayor Anders Ibsen here. (Yep, actually me, not a staffer.) As part of the start of my administration in my first year, I’m doing my best to be community-facing and accessible.

So to start off my first foray into the Tacoma Reddit territory, I would like to offer an AMA for the next 24 hours. Feel free to inquire about anything, and I will do my best to get you that information.

For technical questions, service requests, or information I might not know off-hand, I will refer you to my city email and we can talk off-line with the appropriate city staff to help you.

Finally, moving forward as a general rule, while I do not have capacity to actively peruse this sub, I will do my best to make postings here about pertinent topics as they come up, and respond accordingly in those posts. In between those, you’re always welcome to reach me via email, or out in community.

Let the questions commence!

Options to Remove Unprofessional Sheriff?

Some Pierce County residents want to remove unprofessional Sheriff Keith Swank while preserving the position of an elected Sheriff. Any thoughts on how this could legally work?

For reference, Swank spends his workday tweeting insults at constituents. He was reportedly going to be fired from SPD for this behavior - he resigned before this could happen.
