What is TPS spending money on?

So Franklin Elementary canceled it's TK program last week. It seems like every year TPS is in a deficit. I looked at the salary schedule on open payroll and as of 2023 6 people were making over 250k per year and 36 were making over 200k. The OSPI superintendent makes less!!!

Yet that are canceling TK programs and last year they laid off/or relocated a bunch of Para educators across the district para salary is max of 30 grand per year.

What are they spending money on? Last year there was an article about HR using 8000 to have a team retreat at some swanky resort. If this is common knowledge what else are they doing with the money? Would it be worth it to start a campaign to hire a financial investigator to look at misappropriation of funds?

The administration retreat last year was 8800 I was way off. I corrected it.

Sorry about that.

Fuck you to whomever shot at my house at 3 am last night. I'm not taking down my rainbow flag!

Last night I was woken up at 315am by apparent gunshots. I didn't see anyone outside. Cops were called by neighbours but they just drove around and left. Today I notice 2 shell casings by my front gate and a hole in my siding. Idk if its related to my giant rainbow flag but it sure seems suspicious. Well I'm not taking it down. You're going to have to shoot me directly if you want me to stop flying my colours.

This shouldn't happen in a queer af town like Tacoma.

And btw if you know where my house is don't post the location ffs.

Personally I think we should make this town even more gay! Let's not take this lying down.

Anyone up for a vigil or procession?

This happened this morning. I was part of the group trying to stop this. We failed. Many of us in the community are heartbroken. Looking for ideas to gain closure and solidarity. What do you all think about some sort of vigil or procession around the site? Actually, if it turns out to be a popular idea, we could do it every week. Remind those developers constantly of what they did. Anybody down for this?

Would you be interested in a School of Rock-type program here?

We are a group of musically-inclined locals with kids who are all interested in playing in bands. We’re exploring developing a youth music program here focused in putting kids in cohorts to play, alongside individual lessons. Anyone else out there ever looked for something like this for their kids? Ever found anything? Would your kids want something like this? Are you a musician who would want to participate? Thanks for your thoughts 🥁🎸🎺🎤🎹

Cheney Stadium & mobility issues

Hi there! I haven’t been to Cheney Stadium before and am looking for feedback on how easy to navigate it is. I have some mobility issues - I have trouble walking/standing for long periods and need to take breaks when possible. How far away is the parking area to the stadium entrance? Is there usually a long line to get in to the stadium? Is the stadium itself large / does take a while to get to your seats from the entrance? I’ve recently attended a concert at Climate Pledge, so with that as a comparison, is there generally more/less walking involved to navigate Cheney Stadium? Thank you for any info/help!

Support your local young musicians

This Thursday, the Curtis High School jazz band will be playing at T Town Swing. Go out and support our young musicians

Oh, and also, there's dancing. Beginner class included with the dance at 8, and you don't need to bring a partner

It will be certifiably awesome

Per his own mother, Russell Beebo Russell aka Sky King, felt pressure to provide

As I continue my deep dive on this , I have found very compelling evidence. I have confirmed the poster is his mother.

There was much that was not said in the documentary. It was almost as if they wanted to avoid certain entanglements , not that they didn't want to say things , but they were being cautious. The fact that the wife's family cut him off , says a lot, especially in this context.

Let's look at the facts. He was a dedicated evangelical Christian.Even praying for a customer that entered his bakery. The specific evangelical church he attended believed in the provider mandate of men. The wife's family has been utterly silent. The one time they did speak was just to reference jesus and ask for privacy. I'm not here to judge that, but I will say there was pressure on this guy.I'm quite convinced of it. And the institutions and people who applied that pressure are not talking about it.

Missed connection at Metropolitan Market

Hi all! I’m visiting SeaTac for the week, and was looking to make some connections while in the area. Today I went to Metro Market for dinner and asked these 3 recent grads from U of Puget Sound (all sociology majors) about any fun things to do in Tacoma. There was one that was kind of cute and mentioned I think a cool food spot as a good “date idea.” Idk if they were being nice or I was just being clueless to hints as a guy, but would love the chance to talk again. Also if anyone else wants to shoot out fun social ideas for a 20s-something young professional let me know!

Giant Pacific Octopus seen today at Owen Beach

First time I've ever seen one at low tide. I'm not an expert so I was glad someone who once worked at an aquarium was nearby to confirm the species. When I came upon it it was moving the sand around to better conceal itself...I think.

Tacoma Wailing Club

Me and my friend were talking about how we should normalize pained wailing as a way to relieve some emotions. But there's so many people who could benefit from that. The idea is that we find somewhere a little away from houses in the woods, trails, etc. And we walk out at night as a group just letting it all out. We need this, anybody in?

Octopus at Owen today 😍

I have always wanted to see one in the wild so it was super exciting to find this little guy, especially with my kids and friends from out of town to share in the experience. It was about the size of my hand (I’m guessing, I obviously did not touch it to measure). What incredible creatures!!

TONIGHT: Parks Tacoma Special Meeting

Many of us understand how important Parks Tacoma is in our community. Many of us are also aware of the current major budget issues facing the department, and I'm sure many of us have questions. (Shout out to the commissioners on social media who have been sharing background and answering questions - it's been insightful).

Tonight, Monday May 18, is a special meeting and public hearing about the budget where all community members are welcome. Comments can be submitted by 4pm today, and verbal testimony during the event is also possible.

6:00pm 4702 S. 19th St. Tacoma • Remote link is also available

All details here, including the meeting link - budget information - meeting agenda etc.

https://www.parkstacoma.gov/event/special-meeting-5-18-26/

Too often there's folks online complaining (and sometimes, rightly so) about local government and entities (like Parks); there's a lot of opportunities to be involved and informed that too often aren't taken. Here's one of them.

Meeting people in your 20s

Hey!

I’m a 23 y/o female in Tacoma. I grew up on Washington’s east side and eventually ended up over here. I’ve been here for a few months but have only met a handful of people, most of who I was never really able to fully connect with, so I’m really lacking a sense of community here.

What do you guys do to meet people around this age? Coffee shops? Parks? Maybe a bar, but I can’t seem to find many great places where it’s the vibe I could go in alone for a drink. It’s hard to connect organically anymore and have just never had a great experience with dating apps/apps like bumble bff.

So, looking for suggestions. Thanks!
