Democratic Washington state House candidate arrested for DUI in Tacoma

Krista Perez, a progressive Democrat challenging incumbent Democratic Rep. Melanie Morgan in Tacoma’s 29th Legislative District, was booked into Pierce County Corrections for driving under the influence early Tuesday morning (Aug. 11). Per Seattle Red’s reporting, she struck a parked car and set off a chain reaction that damaged five cars in total, and the Tacoma City Attorney’s Office has not yet filed formal charges.

The timing matters because the race is extremely tight: unofficial primary results as of Aug. 13 show Perez leading Morgan by just 380 votes, with both advancing to November. A DUI doesn’t disqualify her, and a Democratic consultant noted that even a marginal effect on voters could decide such a close contest. Perez, on her attorney’s advice, declined to comment further.

The funding also covers gun violence prevention education and direct outreach to gun owners. Staff will collect demographic info from recipients, targeting firearm owners and people close to them.
