Did you know your GL Tailscale router is announcing your Tailnet name directly to your work PC? Fix it here -> gl-tailscale-fix plugin v1.0.22 drops with lots of goodies.

---
I'll start right out with an apology for the marketing headline, but it's not fluff - your tailnet domain is being directly passed along to the devices connected to your TS travel router. The updated blog post will tell you how to test it yourself, and more importantly how to fix it (hint - new toggle).

Sorry it's been a few months since v21 - business has left me little time for side-projects, and this v22 update just continued growing (and adding repeat test bench cycles) until I finally had to cut some features over to the v23 list. Here's a short list of what made it in:

  • Plugin certification on GL firmware through 4.11.0
  • Even *more* enhanced dual-layer kill switch that builds additional protections for router reboot persistence, block WAN subnet, guest/IoT coverage, more IPv6 coverage and two-layer protection while dropping or swapping between exit nodes with live devices on the tunnel
  • new optional "Kill Switch Follows Exit node" function that enables users of the mode-button or app toggle to have the KS arm & disarm when switching from "VPN mode" to "overlay" mode.
  • the above headliner of "Hide Tailscale Search Domain" to prevent your TS enabled router from broadcasting your tailnet via DHCP to your connected devices.
  • Version Manager improvements
  • a move towards op25 (and apk) support (more for v23)
  • hardening, fixes, UI refinements, etc.
  • a night of lost sleep redoing the blog's TS VPN setup guide with improved flow and updated screenshots for 4.8 - 4.11 firmware

So.. enough of me... linky's:

AdGuard Home + HaGeZi dns blocklists (and more) on GL routers - PSA

We seem to have a recurring theme about AdGuard Home, reasonable blocklists and crashes on GL routers, so I'm attempting to consolidate a few key tips to be aware of for those getting to know the routers.:

-----

1) Which HaGeZI blocklists should I run? - Here's the word from u/hagezi himself:

https://preview.redd.it/xl106hxwvmnh1.png?width=660&format=png&auto=webp&s=9393277ffe6225aab16b72f47d08d0c454e053f9

-----

2) How much memory does it use? Why does my router randomly crash? - Again, well said by the same man:

https://preview.redd.it/zhc60gotwmnh1.png?width=616&format=png&auto=webp&s=ab86af9472861d96681f4cbd15e7bdea2ab24c52

Why? During blocklist updates AGH briefly holds two copies of the filter data: it downloads the new list into memory, parses it, then atomically swaps it with the old one. The ruleset stays on the router until the swap completes. This can cause memory (RAM) usage to spike 3-4x during an update and easily crash a router. Rule sets like HaGeZI's Threat Intelligence have 2M+ records and require a *minimum* of 2GB free RAM to run safely - your router does not have this kind of RAM.

-----

3) What are my options if I want more filtering without killing my router?

There are many public DNS servers these days that will provide default levels of filtering. Eg:

* Cloudflare: https://blog.cloudflare.com/introducing-1-1-1-1-for-families/
* Quad9: https://quad9.net/service/service-addresses-and-features/

You could chose these instead of running AGH on the router by adding them under "NETWORK > DNS", but you don't have to - when you can have both. You can have local AGH as your primary DNS filter and a cloud DNS as the 2nd.

For both, you use one of the above filtering DNS as your AGH "Upstream DNS". This is under the AGH setting page: Admin Panel > APPLICATIONS > AdGuard Home > Settings Page > (new tab) > Settings > DNS Settings (e.g.. http://192.168.8.1:3000).

In there you can see many different DNS providers you can use as your AGH upstream provider(s): https://adguard-dns.io/kb/general/dns-providers/

What this gains you is the ability to still have all your personal custom AGH block rules and query monitoring on the local router, but offload the heavy lifting to the upstream commercial DNS provider. This way, any queries coming from your router's LAN client devices get filtered by your custom AGH rules first, then passed to the upstream DNS for final malware/family filtering. Any queries that get caught by either set of filters get blackholed and do not resolve (blocked).

------

4) What else?

Another cool DNS option offered by GL routers is Control-D (https://controld.com/) or NextDNS (https://nextdns.io/). Both of these are available under NETWORK > DNS menu settings (on more recent firmware), and each provides a different way to create a personalized account with custom DNS filtering in the cloud. We'll leave this for user exploration...

------

Enjoy your ad-free (or ruining your 13 yr old's browsing habits) weekend!

------------------------------------------------------------------------

EDITS:

PS - If trying to enforce LAN DNS filtering, you generally want:

* AP > NETWORK > DNS > "Override DNS Settings of All Clients" turned ON. This redirects (DNATs) any errant non-encrypted DNS queries from your router's LAN client devices to the router DNS settings.

* AP > APPLICATIONS > AdGuard Home > "AdGuard Home Handle Client Requests" turned ON.

Note that *none* of the above will stop LAN devices that are using encrypted DoH DNS. DoH hides the client device's DNS queries as regular https web traffic, so the router cannot intercept them. DoH, DoQ and DoT are hard to block (enterprise equipment with MiTM certs for DoH). Most of the above is for devices you control and *want* to participate in DNS blocking. A sophisticated LAN user will have many ways around this and it is sincerely not worth your time even trying to stop them at a router/network level.

Update: Enhanced Tailscale / gl-tailscale-fix plugin v1.0.21 improvements

---
Recommended update for gl-tailscale-fix plugin users. The new v1.0.21 update includes improvements to the Kill Switch, IPv6 routing and GL 4.9 compatibility. Full release details here:
https://remotetohome.io/blog/gl-tailscale-fix/#update-v1021

Important behavior change to be aware of - the plugin's Kill Switch no longer disables automatically when disabling Custom Exit Node routing. This is to both increase security as well as now allowing a user to safely swap between exit node IPs or even temporarily disable exit routing to make other changes (binary updates, etc) with zero leak risk to attached clients.

We also want to provide a shout out to u/Shox187 for finding a potential momentary edge-case IP exposure when changing TS / exit node states while on slow uplinks (e.g. mobile data), which the updated design closes.

Other improvements include updates to ensure IPv6 IP Masq, improved compatibility with recent GL 4.9+ firmware TS updates and "in-place" plugin updates with active tunnels.

Significant update for GL-Tailscale-Fix users: Secure end-to-end IPv6 tunnel support added!

Quick announcement to say that gl-tailscale-fix v1.0.20 now adds full IPv6 support and an IPv6 killswitch for GL routers.

For GL TS users that have kept IPv6 disabled on your routers to avoid potential leaks - you can now safely hit the "enable" button.

Why this matters - for those of you with server (exit node) routers behind IPv4+v6 CGNAT (eg. DS-Lite, MAP-E and MAP-T), you now have a better chance to bypass DERP relays and get direct connections when traveling on IPv6 enabled networks. More detail here:
https://remotetohome.io/blog/gl-tailscale-fix/#ipv6-enabled

Includes IPv6 subnet routing for LAN & Guest networks as well. Also several smaller reliability and 4.9 fw compatibility updates for all users.
